If you are a woman reading this, have you observed that whenever you and your boyfriend or a guy you friend zoned exercises together for a few weeks, you saw their two layers of belly fats vanished while you only lose one? Unfair right? Well, it's what nature wants. Men lose weight faster than women because they have different body compositions. Men have larger bodies than women and blessed with a lot of testosterone. In fact, on average, men lost about 11.8 kilograms over eight weeks compared to women only losing about 10.2 kilograms.

Since men are larger, they have more cells and it takes more calories to maintain their weight. When they exercise they burn more calories to move a larger body. But that does not mean women should eat more or increase their mass to increase the number of calories burned. No. There are many factors that make men win in losing calories faster. Thanks to their high-level testosterone, they gain more muscles quickly, their protein synthesis, lean body mass, and metabolic rate increases which contributes hugely to burning more calories.

Also, since men are more muscular than women, their body water content is larger than their counterpart, thus losing more water weight when working out. When the body is in caloric deficiency, the glycogen, a stored form of carbohydrates breaks down and the water from that compound is taken out. Meaning, the body loses water weight. In fact, for every gram of glycogen in the liver and muscles, 3 grams of water is stored.

Plus, men and women store fat differently. Men accumulate fat in a belly region, making them appear pregnant when they reached obesity, while women store fat in the hips and thighs, which makes their body pear-shaped. That shape is important in evolutionary perspective. Estrogen reduces women's ability to burn energy after eating so they may maintain their curvature filled with fats. The subcutaneous fat around their thighs, rear and hips are essential for childbearing. But in losing this kind of fat, it does not improve their metabolic risk factors because it's not metabolically active. So, the differences in metabolic outcomes observed in men and women who follow the same diet are that the fat from men's abdomens are more mobilized during weight loss, while women lose more subcutaneous fat.

Though, subcutaneous fat is easier to lose than visceral fat or deep-belly fat, a type that hangs around the abdominal organs and surrounds the vital organs

Though, subcutaneous fat is easier to lose than visceral fat or deep-belly fat, a type that hangs around the abdominal organs and surrounds the vital organs. But an extra visceral fat that men carry is considered dangerous to health because it is been linked to a higher risk of conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Unlike women, adding an extra weight on a pear-shaped body won't affect any vital organs. So, it's not dangerous for them to eat another piece of cake.

Women's menstrual cycle also affect their weight. It triggers their craving for unhealthy foods to deal with the hormonal fluctuations. They search for comfort food such as ice cream, cookies, cakes, or any other delicious desserts to uplift their mood and satiate their cravings. Women are more likely to eat more in response to stress, whereas men are more likely to turn to alcohol.

But women, do not be discouraged when you feel like you are not losing the same amount of calories as men do, because it is not a race. You will eventually attain the ideal body in the end. Just be patient. And we might lose in a weight-loss race but at least we win in an eating contest.
