"Lie can travel around the world and back while the truth is still lacing up its boots" – Mark Twain
We love novel stories and the majority of these stories are fabricated by a paid journalist or a blogger or a bored troller who wants to have fun or jeopardize someone's reputation. Fake news spread faster than genuine news because of its odd unbelievable headline and majority of people won't read the article further. They just saw the shocking headline, jumped to a conclusion then share it with everyone in their social media. But, not only it can destroy someone's reputation, but it can also plant false memories into people's minds.
Our mind does not act as a camera that can capture every detail of what happened that day. We only remember the gist of an event, not the whole picture. We barely remember the small details such as the food we ate in the morning, the color of the curtain of our friend's home, and the name of your new neighbor. Our memory acts as an incomplete puzzle. It only shows the important details and sometimes those gaps can be filled with a false memory without conscious awareness and that's what fake news can do.
People believe fake news especially if those stories align with their political beliefs but smart people are less likely to believe that BS news because they are skeptical. They question their personal biases and news sources so they are less likely to remember false details even though it aligns with their beliefs. Whereas dumb people are more likely to remember scandals that reflect poorly on a certain famous person or politician. Sometimes misremember or create new details just to sync with their beliefs.
Fake news can be used as a weapon against political candidates which can affect the voter's decision. False information can cunningly make an incompetent candidate a smart, kind and deserving person to take the applied position.
Sadly, 70% of people spread and believed fake news which states that a lot of people are not smart enough and would rather click the share button than thinking and researching if it's legit or not. But the scarier part is artificial intelligence is being used in creating fake news like a deep fake. A video that can almost perfectly mimic someone's face especially prominent people by replacing someone's face with that AI-generated face. This technology is dangerous because it is hard to detect if it is genuine or not. It can fool anyone even smart people. This can be used to strengthen the fake new's credibility, create fake porn videos using the faces of celebrities and make someone like a politician say something they did not actually say.
