"Kira, you brought your bags, right?"
Kira, a 16-year old girl with black hair and bright blue highlights at the ends, was leaning on the railing of a platform. That platform just so happened to be attached to the back of a dragon, and that dragon was currently flying at around 2,000 feet in the air.
Kira turned to Ethan and said, "Yes, I made sure to bring everything I need, just in case. I know I won't be chosen for anything special, but we're still staying for a few days, right?"
Ethan was Kira's twin brother, and he was heading to the Axelstrad Kingdom capital along with Kira. Ethan looked similar to Kira, but his hair was dark brown in color instead.
Axelstrad Kingdom is where the two twins reside, and they are currently heading to the capital. They are evaluated for their magical aptitude while there, and depending on their aptitude, they will have certain job options that others may not have.
"Yes Kira, we will be staying for a few days after the ceremony, no matter how it turns out," Ethan responded.
"So... are you nervous?"
"A little. Are you nervous?"
"Yeah..."
"Don't worry," Ethan said, "everything will work out fine. Have I ever been wrong?"
"No. You're right. I should cheer up. Everything will work out just fine."
"See? I'm never wrong."
With a jolt, the dragon they were standing on landed. They had officially arrived at the capital.
Almost immediately, Ethan walked down the steps and off the dragon. He turned around, grinning, and yelled to Kira, "Come on slowpoke! What are you waiting for?"
Kira looked down at the steps, and then tenderly stepped off the dragon and onto the top step. She gave Ethan a nervous smile and began to walk down the steps quickly. When she neared the bottom step, Ethan said, "Why are you so nervous? I already told you that everything would be fine."
She enthusiastically jumped down to the ground from the bottom step and gave Ethan a fake smile. Ethan looked at her and smiled back, saying "Let's go before we're late. We don't want to miss our chance, do we?"
He abruptly grabbed Kira's hand. She flinched as he touched her, and then he began to pull her along, running towards where the ceremony was about to begin. Weaving through the massive mass of people, they quickly made it towards the front of the crowd.
Once they got to the front, Ethan said "Kira, meet me back at the city entrance. We can talk there. Get in line so you aren't late." He sprinted off unexpectedly as his hand slid from hers. Before she understood what was going on, she was alone.
She turned to the two long lines of people. She had never been to a ceremony before, but she could clearly tell that the lines were separated into male and female. She sighed, and then joined the back of the excessively long line on the right, with only females.
---------
As she stood in line, Kira could figure out a few things about what went on during a ceremony. There was a man with a piece of paper standing next to a clear orb with a light glow coming off it. People would go up and place their hand on the orb. As they did that, the orb would change color.
She had barely heard what the different colors meant over the crowd, but she heard someone explain the meaning of the different colors. Apparently, a golden color was the best possible result, meaning that you had the best possible magic aptitude. However, it was extremely rare, to have a golden color. Having this color pretty much guaranteed that you had to become a dragon rider. It was the only color that forced you to have a certain job, since you didn't have a choice. So far, only 17 people had gotten this color.
The rest of the colors were somewhat common, some more than others. There's bright yellow, which means that you have a decent magic aptitude. There's red, which means you have an okay magic aptitude. There's green, which means you have a small amount of magic aptitude. There's blue, which means you have almost no magic whatsoever.
Finally, there's colorless. 90% of the world's population is colorless, and doesn't have any magic whatsoever. If you have no magic, you are sent back home to get a civilian job and upkeep the kingdom.
It was common knowledge that women couldn't have a higher magic aptitude than red, and even that was extremely rare.
Eventually, the line thinned down to where Kira had almost gotten to the front. She watched the few people before her out of boredom. One person had gotten green; three of them had a blue color; everyone else, on the other hand, was colorless. After a few minutes, it was finally her turn. She heard the man with the paper shout "Next!" In response to this, she stepped up to the clear orb. She was extremely nervous. She nervously reached her hand out, shaking a little. She rested her hand on the cold surface of the orb, and it was as if time had stopped.
Kira, the man with the paper, and everyone close enough to see her gasped in shock. They couldn't believe their eyes.
The orb was glowing a bright golden color.
