Uncle D said, "I was looking into why your schematics changed, and nothing seems to be pointing to Krane."

"And..." I said.

"I think I have an idea," Uncle D said, "But I can't look too far without triggering any alarms."

"So what does that mean?" I asked, not really following.

"Zoey," Uncle D said, "You up for a mission?"

——————————

"How come she gets to go on a mission alone and I can't come with her?" Leo complained as Uncle D typed on his cyber desk.

"Because she's bionic and you're not," Uncle D replied without looking up, "Besides, I need someone on the comms."

"Can't you do that?" Leo asked.

"No," Uncle D said, "Where she's going, there cant be any trace of my voice."

"Yeah, where am I going anyways?" I asked.

"To the one place I had hoped to avoid forever," Uncle D said, "Synican Manufacturing."

"The giant manufacturing company?" Leo gasped, and Uncle D nodded, "Oh come on! I've always wanted to go there!"

"Why would a manufacturing company be messing with my bionics?" I asked.

"It's not the company I'm worried about," Uncle D said, "I'm worried about its founder."

Leo and I both have him a blank stare.

"Dylan Synican," Uncle D explained, "We went to college together, and he was almost as smart as me. When we graduated, he wanted to go into business with me, manufacturing the latest tech. However, I knew that it would fail, so I turned him down. In the early years, Douglas and I were in fierce competition with Dylan. In the public eye, we were competing to be the largest tech manufacturers. But we were really competing to be the first to develop bionic super soldiers."

"So what's the big deal?" I asked, "Companies compete all the time."

"Well, then Douglas and I successfully implanted Adam with bionics," Uncle D continued, "We had won. And that's where it all fell apart. You see, while Douglas and I were working on bionic humans, Dylan was working on androids. While both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, the androids are much easier to mass produce."

"So you wanted to keep the tech out of Synican's hands," Leo said.

"Exactly," Uncle D said, "But you know when I told you Douglas wanted to sell the bionic technology to the highest bidder?"

"Yeah," I recalled, and then it clicked, "Synican was the highest bidder, wasn't he."

"Bingo," Uncle D said, "So I kicked Douglas out of the company and the issue mostly went away. But Synican still could've been working in the shadows."

"Besides, Douglas and him seemed pretty friendly when you kicked him out," Leo said.

"But I guess we'll never know," Uncle D mused.

"Hold up," I said, "Y'all realize that Douglas is upstairs, right?"

"Right you are," Leo said, "I'll interrogate him."

"No, I need you down here on the comms," Uncle D said, "I'll talk to him. Zoey, the transport is ready, I want you to get there as fast as you can."

"On it," I said, grabbing a comm set and jamming it into my ear. I walked into the transport, barely leaving the lab before hearing Leo's voice crackle through the earpiece.
