He sat there on the bed, my childhood sweetheart. My man. Leon Holmes. He was a detective now in the Boston police department. He wore a dark blue shirt on the upper section of his sleeve was the number twenty-three. He wore matching trousers as well. His coal black boots were also polished. He had a smug grin, and that boyband haircut, wavy mousy hair.

"Leon," I say his name in the most amorous way I could. I feel my cheeks flush. "What are you doing here?" I ask him as he stands up. He is a little under six foot, not much taller than me to be Frank.

"Can a guy not be there on his girls most important day?" He stretched out his arms like that of a plane. I read his mind. Leon wants me to fall into his deep embrace. I yield to my ever beating heart. My mind says play it cool. I'm like, for once, shut up brain! I take two long strides toward him and he wraps in those manly arms of his. Leon holds me and pulls me closer to him. I feel so warm. So safe. He lets me go. He knows I need an inhalation of oxygen. Leon eyeballs me from head to toe. "Its good to see ye," he eventually says.

"How did you -"

"Get in?" He finishes my sentence. "You really ought to lock yer balcony window ya know. Any freak might get in."

"Like you ya mean?" I hit him softly on the arm, in a playful way. I have hurt him much worst in the past. Like when my favorite reality show is on and he hides the remote control from me. That really irks me. I aim for his privates. Yep, I have hurt his manhood.

He drags a hand over his lush hair, "you think of me as a freak?" He sounds sarcastic. "Im hurt you would think that."

"Oh shut up!" I answer him and almost immediately pay him a winsome smile.

Then I remembered the conversation I had with doctor Hwan, I wondered how much of that conversation Leon heard.

"Say, Leon, did you hear my conversation with Mai's father?"

"The Chinese guy?"

I roll my eyeballs disappointed that he would stereotype. "Korean," I correct him. "And yes."

"Yeah," he rubs the back of his head, its a tell when he knows he has done something wrong and then he gifts me that dreamy smile of his pearl white teeth. "I heard him say quite clearly "she is evil" I'll freely admit my curiosity peaked. who was he referring to?"

I did not know whether to tell him the truth or make something up. Then it dawned on me. Our relationship has been built on trust - as any relationship should be. "You know my professor?" I asked him.

He gave me a nod of his head. "You gotta be a bit more clear Ella."

"Well, you know doctor Minerva?"

"Yeah, I think you mentioned her before."

I raised my eyebrows at him, "Well, " I began to construct my sentence.

It was at that point I heard Hwan trying to figure out the stiff bolt on the door to the bathroom. I moved away from Leon and closed the door just as Hwan had figured out the difficult locking mechanism. As I closed the door he was coming out of the bathroom. Whatever he did it smelled like a stink bomb. Gross!

I heard him breathing on the other side of the door. He might be a genius but he is also a bit of a creep.

He passed by my room and then I heard footsteps walking down the stairs.

That I presumed was him.

"You OK?" Leon asks me in a rather strange way.

I carried on with the conversation. "Mai's father, Hwan, said that doctor Minerva is -"

"Is what?" Leon awaits my response.

"Evil," I had lowered my voice.

Paranoia is a terrible thing.

"She looks like a witch," Leon guffawed as he probably pictured the last time he saw her. "Anyone would think she is evil, she dresses in black. She has that weird wonky eye -"

"She was born that way," I icily say. And black is trending like mad nowadays. It is a very popular color thank you very much." I crossed my arms over my bosom.

"I still think she looks like a wich," Leon adamantly added.

Just then the door to my room flung open.

"Whos a witch!" Mai asked getting the tail end of the conversation.

I rolled my eyes and tutted, "none of yer business!" I snapped at her. Today of all days Mai is fastly becoming my number one enemy. "How many times have I to tell you, Mai, knock before you come in! Grrr," I don't kow why I growled like a dog frustration perhaps?

Mai then immediately noted Leon and she had a winsome smile for him. "Hey there Leon," Mai said in a rather flirtatious way.

I stare daggers at her. In my head, I am screaming. THAT IS MY MAN!

Over wine and a lot of gin Mai admitted she was jealous that I had such a hunk in Leon.

Leon was not a hunk when we were kids he was a pudgy boy with a girls haircut. Back then we were both social outcasts. Hence why we became so close.

"How are ye?" Leon asked Mai who stared at his bright blue eyes transfixed so she was.

"What do you want Mai?"

She was speechless as she gawked right by me as if I were transparent.

"Mai!" I said her name with sheer venom.

"Coffee," she blurted out. "Would you like a cup of coffee? I know it's your favorite right? That Rica stuff you insist we buy. And you Leon, are you staying? Tea? coffee? A cool beverage?"

I sighed and then spoke. "Mai, your babbling."

"So I am," Mai noticed with a dainty guffaw.

"Im fine for tea thanks," Leon mentions. "I was just going to ask this one if she wanted to go to Jerry's"

"You were?" My mouth opens in the shape of an O. "I love Jerry's!"

"I know," Leon flashes me one of those smiles that very nearly makes me wet.

"I thought you wanted to meet my parents?" Mai huffed.

"I am sure I will see them another time Mai, I really fancy some blueberry pancakes -"

"Don't forget the chocolate -"

"How could I forget the chocolate chips!" I snap almost angrily at Leon.

Leon looks startled as he makes a peace sign.

"Well, I guess I'll see you then," Mai added, as she took a step closer to me. We opened our arms at the same time and embraced one another. "Save me a seat will you?" Mai asks.

"Only if you save one for me," I add.

Mai leaves the room and Leon is ready to follow her out.

"Don't take too long," Leon says. "I know what you are like!"

"I'll take as long as I like, thank you very much. A girl has to look her best, How did you put it? Ah yes, on this the most special day. Ya know, there will be other monumental days, hmmm," I pointed at my ring finger.

"Just don't keep me waiting," and on that note, Leon leaves the room.

Time for me to get ready.

Thus ended; Childhood Sweetheart.
