I ran, pumping my arms harder and harder. I could not let them catch me. I would not be their Guinea pig. Their flashlight beams shone through the dog, casting eerie shadows over the trees. I heard her running beside me. Her breaths matching mine. She would not leave my side. I trusted her to that fact. Together we ran, our energy an endless stream. We would make it. We were going to survive.
BOOM
The gun echoed through the silent night. I collapsed, the pain shooting up my leg. I screamed for her. She screamed for me. But when they surrounded me, I heard her screams no more. As the world started to go dim, one of them shouted.
"We've lost the other one. But it's ok. We just need her."
