A shower felt amazing. The food in my stomach felt amazing. But feeling Lila next to me. Hearing her breath and her heart beat. Now THAT was something I couldn't describe. Being finally reunited with my best friend. We sat together in the lounge that they randomly had in the lab. I leaned into her and silently sent her messages.
Because of course my strange powers allowed me to do that.
Naturally.
I missed you...
Thank you for coming back to me..
She smiled, and I leaned my head on her shoulder. I drifted off.
"December. You can wake up now."
I opened my eyes and smiled up at my mom. She sat at the edge of my bed, and ran her fingers through my hair.
"Time for your first day of grade 1! Aren't you excited?"
I nodded sleepily and clambered out of bed. I watch my mom walk out of my room. My bright blue and pink room.
I quickly dressed and ran down the stairs to see a table full of pancakes. My 4 year older brother, Jaden, was already halfway done with his enormous stack of pancakes that piled up on his plate.
"Hey Dessi!" He grinned through a mouthful of pancakes.
I laughed and sat down at the table, mouth watering at the smell of the food. I ate 4 pancakes, and then a pile of blueberries, then another pancake.
"Wow Dessi!" Laughed Jaden. "Hungry much?" He scrunched up his face a little, and adjusted his hearing aids. I didn't think much of it. I cleared my plate and headed out the door.
I caught the bus to school, backpack full of school supplies and a lunch. I wrung my hands as I pulled up to the new school.
Today was the day.
Later that day, we were having lunch. And I was sitting under the big tree in the front yard of the school. The 5th graders, (my brother included) were playing frisbee on the edge of the field.
And the frisbee flew out of one boys hands.
And landed on the road.
And as I watched Jaden walk out onto the road, I saw a car coming. And the driver couldn't see Jaden. I yelled at Jaden, but he didn't hear me.
Because his hearing aids were running out of battery.
I screamed.
But he didn't hear me.
I felt so much rage and anger as I saw his body skid across the road. The driver, a young man, rushed and checked his pulse and heartbeat. He put his head in his hands.
I saw red.
I screamed. And the tree uprooted and smashed into the ground 20 feet away.
I cried, and the mans car exploded.
I sobbed, and the school caught on fire.
I heard a teacher screaming into her phone.
After what felt like only a few seconds, I felt a needle stab into my arm. I felt them dragging me away. As the drugs started to work their magic, I screamed Jaden's name. And as my vision started to go black, I heard them say:
"We've secured the patient. Prepare to head back to the lab."
...
I woke up. Ready for more torture. It had been 5 years since the scientists took me away.
From my mom.
My home.
My brother.
I looked around my room. Nothing in it except a fan, a small table, a chair, and a springy, lumpy cot.
The walls were made out of a strong, metal-like material. One that I couldn't break through.
The intercom buzzed. It was Diana. The main doctor.
"Happy birthday December."
"It's my birthday?!" I asked, shocked.
"You're 12. Congratulations."
I laughed. Because there was no enthusiasm in her voice.
Great. So it's my birthday. Yay.
"You're breakfast will be up soon. Be dressed by then."
"Yes Diana."
I slipped on a plain white t-shirt and jeans, feeling my long blond hair sweep down my back. They said they were going to cut it today. Yay.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
Then I heard the noise.
It was like a scraping noise. Metal against metal. Sparks flew up from the floor. A slab of the floor popped up, and clanged to the ground a few inches to the side.
A face popped out of the hole. It was a girl, about my age, with shoulder length blond hair, and red tips.
"Hi!" She smiled. "You do not know how hard it is to break into a high security lab, with lasers as defense mechanisms."
"I think I can imagine it," I mumbled.
"So, December, you ready to go?" She started to climb back into the hole.
"I'm sorry, what?" I asked, gripping the sides of the cot.
"It's your 12th birthday. Time to join the agency. Duh!" She grinned up at me.
"The what?" I gasped.
"Clearly you haven't been informed. What ever. I'll tell you on the way." She climbed further down into the hole.
"Ok, 2 things," I began. "1, where are we going, and 2, who are you?!"
The girl glanced up at me.
"We're busting you out of this prison." She hesitated. Then said:
"And my names Lila."
...
"DECEMBER!! WAKE UP!! GODDAMMIT YOU SLEEP LIKE A ROCK!"
I jerked awake to Lila shaking my arm and screaming into my ear.
"Come on! The meetings about to start!" She tugged me of the couch, and we headed off down the hall.
