I walked through the halls, the metal floors replaying my footsteps in eerie echoes. As I walked through the doors at the end of the hall, the guards placed their hands on their guns, eyeing me warily.

I blinked as I walked outside, the sun temporarily blinding me. When my eyes came back into focus, I saw a big glass dome in the center of the field. I walked over until I could press my hands into the cool glass, and peered inside. There was really nothing in the dome. Just a concrete floor. And a girl.

Her hair covered her face, and her clothes were ripped. There were bloody scars all over her body, and her fingernails were caked in blood. And as she stood from her standing position, I caught a quick flash of her eyes. A piercing ice blue, glazed and bloodshot. They were wide, and scared. And insane.

She opened her mouth to speak, and I quickly punched in the code over top of the microphone so I could hear what she was saying.

"...think you weren't coming back for me Lila." She grinned a twisted smile, showing her bloody lips and yellow teeth.

"I never left Dess," I replied.

"I beg to differ," she began, coming up to the glass walls and putting her face right in front of mine. "Last time I checked, you left me stranded to be taking here. To be tortured. Do you know what they did to me Lila?!" She laughed hysterically.

"But I'm here now," I breathed, almost scared, but not quite.

"It's been 3 years Lila," she screamed, pounding on the glass. "3 years of waiting!"

"Dess I can explain," I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. "You're not the only one, Dess. There are others now. They controlled me that night. They forced me to walk away!"

"That is impossible. I was born and cursed with the powers. Only I can take control of the mind," she raised her hand to point towards me.

"Dess no..." I protested.

"Only I can penetrate it..." she started to close her fist.

"Dess!" I screamed.

"And only I can force their secrets OUT!" With that she clamped her fist shut and jerked her arm towards herself, as if pulling something away from me.

I screamed in agony as she ripped through my mind, throwing memories aside, searching for her prize. Suddenly, my vision went black, and I could see myself running. I was terrified. I ran away from the flashlight beams. And as I heard Dess screaming, I didn't scream back. I just kept running.

I just kept running.

I fell to my knees as Dess withdrew from my mind.

"You lied again Lila. You lied then. You lied now. You told me that night you would protect me. That you would stay with me. But you just kept running." Dess wiped her face, and as her arm fell back to her side, I saw the shimmer of a tear marked on her arm.

"Well I'll show you. I'll show you they can't break me." She backed up away from the edge of the dome. "I gained more powers while I was here Lila. I'm not the same anymore. And they can't break me." And with that she ran at the side of the dome and began to climb.

She was like a lizard. Her hands and feet stuck to the sides of the dome as she climbed to the top. She reached her destination, and dangled from the ceiling.

"THEY CANT BREAK ME!" She screamed.

"DESS NO!" I ran and punched in the code to open the door. I sprinted into the dome, but I was too late. She gave one final scream of agony, and let go of the ceiling.

She fell in slow motion. As I closed my eyes, I listened for the sound of her hitting the cement. I expected to hear the snap of ribs, and the splatter of blood, but all I heard was a soft thud.

I opened my eyes, and gasped as Dess began to stand up.

"I told you. They can't break me," she croaked. She ran her hand through her hair, and then peered at her hand in shock. As it fell to her side, I saw glistening red staining her palm.

"They can't..." she began. "They can't... th... they can't... break me..."

And with that, she collapsed.
