The next morning Kiki and Devin stayed home. They had a lot to discuss and neither of them were in any condition to be going to school as of right now. They spent a time deciding what they wanted to do, they discussed how they were going to go about the funeral. Or if there was even going to be one.
Then, they spent some time searching through the pictures, trying to pick one for the obituary.
"I like this one." Kiki said, holding up the picture of their parents on their wedding day. "They look so happy." Kiki had a few tears in her eyes. Devin smiled sadly, nodding in agreement.
"Yeah, I think that one would be perfect." He said, smiling at the other pictures in his lap. They had decided to do an obituary of them together, figuring it would be better that way. It was what they would have wanted.
Kiki looked at the picture, pulling it close to her chest.
"Kiki there is some other things we need to discuss." Devin started, Kiki looked up, tilting her head in the cute way she did when she was listening to someone. "Insurance called, they are going to be sending someone to the branch in town. We also need to file for their death certificates." Devin continued to name other things, but Kiki was zoning out. She hadn't slept much since the news came. Her mind was whirling due to everything that had happened.
"Kiki? Are you okay?" Devin asked, he sounded far away... Kiki tried to nod, but instead, she found tears leaving her eyes and she shook her head.
"Dad isn't coming home." She said, actually realizing what that really meant. Her step brother looked at him, pity clouding his eyes.
"No, he isn't."
"Karen isn't either." Devin had a sharp intake of breath, before shaking his head again. Kiki let out a sob, covering her face with her hands.
Strong arms wrapped around her, for a moment she stiffened. Then, she melted into the embrace, openly sobbing into the hard chest. Kiara found herself balling her fists in Devin's dark shirt.
They sat like that for a while, Devin trying to comfort his distraught step sister. He let a few of his own tears miz with hers. Even after the sobs turned into sniffles, Devin still held her.
Once she quieted, he looked down to see her eyes closed and her chest rising and falling in time. She had fallen into a peaceful sleep. Devin laid her down, finding a blanket and covering her sleeping form.
Sighing, he plopped down on a chair next to Kiki, There were dark circles around her now swollen eyes. Her hair was messy in the cute way it always seemed to be, falling however it wanted.
Devin was well aware how cute his little sister was. She wasn't stick thin like all the other girls were so set on being. He caramel skin stretched over her beautiful legs and arms, she had slight curves, most of which she denied.
Of course, none of that was what Devin loved about her. No, it was Kiki as a person that he sought after. Her voice, her smile, her jokes.
Devin was slightly alarmed by the realization of his feelings. He couldn't help but wonder when he started feeling this way...He guessed in a way he always had, from the moment he met her.
He still remembered that day...
It was around the middle of summer, the air was warm and Devin was wearing a short sleeved shirt and a pair of cargo shorts. He looked at his mother, annoyed that he had to meet and play nice with some family he didn't even know. He wanted to be bitter about it, but the glow that his mother was giving off made him unable to hold anything against her. Instead, he just rolled his eyes and stared out the window.
