I had hoped the dangerous part was over but we were coming up on a barren open stretch of land that would leave us with no cover, Z dropped back beside me asking if I was okay to which I could only nod. He motioned for me to raise my face shield so he could see my eyes and know I understood what he was saying.
"We are going to have to gun it, faster than we have run it before but we are going to be sitting ducks and I can't let them get their hands on you!" he shouted over to me
Nodding to show that I understood, he continued "I know it is scary but I need you to keep up and not let off that throttle, okay?"
Again I nodded, "Okay good girl! Put your face shield back down."
I listened and let him back out in front and waited for his signal, we had lost ground in our precious lead ahead of the 8 bikers with Z checking to make sure I was alright and they were gaining dangerously. Z waited for the break we needed in traffic and then we were off again and racing down the open stretch toward our boundary with them hot on our tail, our speeds dangerously fast.
At this point any wrong move on our part we were going to end up dead, there was no way to live through an accident at this speed but it would be preferable to what would happen in the hands of our enemies.
I thought the ride would never end, I wasn't sure how long we had been driving at this breakneck speed when all suddenly I saw Francis' Dinner on the horizon on the side of the highway. That was the marker, we just had to make it there and we would be home free.
Looking in my mirrors for the first time since we hit the open stretch I saw the bikers not much more than a few car lengths behind as they struggled to catch us before we made it past Francis'. Pouring on even more speed Z had us flying by the dinner, where I could see Tink, Rio and several of the prospects waiting to intercept the 8 bikers should they attempt to cross into our territory.
Z backed off his speed now that we were back in our boundaries and I continued to follow him as we hit the suburban streets that lead to Tawny and my house. He pulled up in front of my garage and cut his engine as I drove directly into the garage and put down Dragon's stand. I took off my helmet and set it on the seat and came back out of the garage, closing the door behind me to hide Dragon from view just in case.
Z was pacing on my front veranda, agitation evident in every stride when I came out of the garage, closing down the big door behind me. He watched me stride up to the porch, and just as my foot landed on the top stair he started,
"Jesus have you lost your mind? Do you know what would have happened if they had gotten to you before I did?"
"Yes"
"Do you really? What they would have taken great delight in doing to the President's daughter, and making sure he got all the details in an attempt to break him?"
"I'm sorry!"
"Sorry, you think that's gonna to cut it?" he asked as he strode up to me gripping my upper arms tightly as he forced me to meet his eyes, "If they had hurt you, do you know what it would've done to me? What I would've had to do to them?"
Seeing the pain in his eyes and knowing that it likely would have broken him to have his little sister taken and tortured made my eyes well up, I never wanted to see Z broke. Laying my hand against his cheek,
"I'm truly sorry! I-"
I didn't get a chance to finish my heartfelt reply as he jerked me towards him, wrapping one arm tightly around my waist and tangling the other tightly in my hair as if to prevent me from getting away. But there was no way I was running from this, god his lips on mine, claiming them. It was like that was what they had been waiting for since the last time they touched his.
