The Reid Method: The BeginningChapter Two- Hello My Name Is Nice To Meet You
A week has passed. Spencer's friend Ethan had not shown up for class yet. Spencer noticed he seemed less and less enthusiastic about classes. Maybe the FBI wasn't where he wanted to be.
Spencer hoped not. Ethan was his only friend here. He was really his only friend anywhere right now.
Spencer thought back to that first day last week when he first laid eyes on Jennifer.
After classes ended for the day, Spencer and Ethan talked in their dorm room.
Spencer spoke first sitting on the edge of his bed. "I can't wait to start doing interview techniques, learning how to interrogate serial killers."
Ethan set his bag down on the floor next to his bed. "I'm surprised you knew what was going on in class. You were staring at that girl across from us the whole time."
Spencer looked confused. Had it really been the whole class? Had Ethan known the whole time?
Ethan looked at Spencer. "Do you know her name?"
Spencer shook his head. He didn't want anyone to know he liked this girl. Even Ethan.
"Do you want to know her name?" Ethan asked.
Spencer sighed and nodded reluctantly.
Ethan smiled. "There's a party tonight. We're going."
Spencer didn't like the idea. He was content to stay back on campus alone. Of course, just like always, Ethan convinced him to go.
They found Jennifer in the basement of Neil Pearce's house. He was hosting the party.
Jennifer was playing darts, a crowd watching the game surrounded her.
Ethan approached her first, Spencer following behind.
The crowd cleared out from watching the game and everyone headed to the bar across the room.
"Jennifer" Ethan called out. Ethan had already introduced himself to Jennifer earlier after class had ended.
Ethan put his hand on Spencer's shoulder, pushing him towards Jennifer. "Jennifer, I'd like you to meet my good friend, Spencer."
She extended her hand for Spencer to shake. Spencer hated other people's germs and bacteria and he avoided contact at all times. He wanted to shake Jennifer's hand. He didn't care about any of that right now.
"J.J." she said, smiling.
"Spencer" he took her hand and shook it. He returned her warm smile.
"So J.J." Ethan spoke up. Spencer had forgotten he was there.
"You think you can show Spencer how you keep winning at this game?" He picked up a dart and handed it to her.
"Sure" she nodded, taking the dart.
Ethan pointed over his shoulder backing away slowly. "I'm going to head to the bar and grab a drink. You two have fun."
Then he disappeared into the crowd.
Spencer suddenly felt scared. He thought Ethan was going to help him, instead he abandoned him and now he had no idea what to do or say.
J.J. turned to Spencer. "Have you played before?"
Spencer grimaced and shook his head.
J.J. showed him how to line up the dart with the board.
Spencer threw the dart and it hit the corner of the 10 section.
J.J. chuckled quietly. "Don't worry you'll get better."
J.J. then took a shot. The dart went right into the bull's eye.
Spencer smiled looking over at Jennifer. "How are you so good at this?"
"I grew up in a small town just outside of Pensylvania. Darts was like a national sport."
She went up to the dart board and took them down. She handed one to Spencer.
"What about you? she asked. "Where are you from?"
"Las Vegas."
"Any good at playing cards?" J.J. joked.
Spencer smiled. "Poker's my favourite. I never lose."
"Really?" J.J. said, impressed.
"Yeah" Spencer said confidently. He was glad that J.J. seemed impressed with him. He was afraid that she would think he was weird, or maybe even make fun of him when he wasn't around.
"So besides playing darts, what else is there to do in your hometown?" Spencer asked.
"I played Varsity soccer to get a scholarship here. That's pretty much what I've spent the last year doing." She looked over at Spencer. "You obviously didn't need a scholarship to get here, did you?"
Spencer was flustered. He knew the reason he was here was going to come up. After all, he is a 15 year old attending an FBI training program.
"No, you're right,I didn't need a scholarship to get here" Spencer admitted. "I have an eidetic memory and an IQ of 187." He held his breath, waiting for her to say something.
"So you're a genius?" she said chuckling quietly.
He locked eyes with her. "Yeah, I guess I am."
Someone called J.J. over to the table across the room. She turned her head to look where the voice had come from and then looked back at Spencer.
"I'll see you later Spencer" she smiled before walking away to join the crowd at the table.
"Bye" Spencer said quietly. He turned and watched her walk away and then turned back to face the dart board.
He smiled to himself. Had he just had a conversation with a girl that went well? No stuttering, no stammering, and she didn't seem to think he was a nerd either. He looked down at the dart in his hand and threw it at the dart board in front of him.
To his surprise, it hit the bull's eye dead on.
