I started to drive the twenty-five-minute drive down to the hospital where Cassie and Mike were when my mother called me.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Hun, how are you?"

"I'm doing fine, mom. The real question is, how's the hospital? Meet any new people?"

"You know I can't get up to interact with anyone due to my condition, honey. I can't even walk."

"Yes, I know, and I'm worried. You used to talk to everyone you saw, now you..." I cut myself short, not wanting to repeat the same sentence for the fourth time this week.

"Please don't worry. Live your life to the fullest. Act as if I'm not a burden to you."

"But you're not a burden and you know it! I'd travel across the world and back for you."

"Honey, live your life and forget about me. I'll be gone sooner than you know, anyways."

The call ended, probably due to the two minute call time the hospital put on their patient's phones. They don't want them to get too stressed, they say.

Honestly, it's a bunch of bullshit. They just don't want to pay extra for the phone bills.

-------

I pulled into the hospital parking lot, checking my phone. 3:24pm. The day after I found their bodies on the beach.

I walked inside and strolled to the front desk, "I'm here for Cassie Hollis and Mike... Fuck... What's his last name?" I blushed as I realized I said the last part out loud, but the lady at the desk didn't find me comedic at all. I knew her, though. We went to school together a while back

"Miss Hollis is in room 16B on the second floor. Mike is in the room next door, 17B," she tapped her long ass nails on the desk.

"Thanks, dude," I said and she rolled her eyes.

-------

I opened the door to Mike's room and the heart monitor immediately started to annoy the shit out of me.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

I ran my hands down my face and sighed, walking towards Mike's body on the bed.

"Why'd you do it?" I slapped him across his perfectly sculpted face.

"She can't love me. Not after what I've done," he whispered, turning his head to look out the window.

"She almost died, Mike! Jesus Christ, get your head out of your ass and look around! The girl was already hurting, and you dump your shit on her?"

"What? How? Is she okay?" He panicked, trying to sit up.

I shoved him back down, "they said she slit her wrists and almost ODed on ibuprofen. It was bad enough that I had to drag her out of the river below the god damn cliff before she fucking bled out or drowned!"

Still fuming, I grabbed the vase that was on the table beside him and threw it on the floor. The glass shattered and the shards flew everywhere.

"Alex, please don't. I don't want you to have to be in the hospital, too," he was looking up at the ceiling, taking deep breaths. A tactic he used whenever his parents would go off on him.

"How'd you survive that anyway?" I grabbed his shoulders and squeezed them as hard as I could out of anger, "you're such a fucking imbecile! God, why am I friends with you?"

"I don't know... First thing I know, I blacked out. Next thing I know, I'm here."

"Michael! Just shut up for five minutes! I'm going to go see your girlfriend, who is almost dead because of you, might I add-"

"I didn't fucking mean for that to happen! I wanted to actually die, not survive in this fucked up place!" He started to tear up. Yeah, a manly man is almost crying right in front of me...

I took a deep breath and relaxed my muscles, "Is there anything you would like me to say to her?"

"That I love her and never meant to hurt her that much."

He just doesn't get it, "If you were fucking sorry then you wouldn't have done what you did. You knew she would try to kill herself after you did. I read her entire diary, Mike. If you really knew her, you would have known that. Mya took her to your house the first time because she tried to commit suicide, not because she was fucking drunk!"

"Just go... I need some time alone..." Tears rolled down his cheeks.

I turned on my heel and opened the door, walking out and heading for Cassie's room. The girl my idiot friend almost killed.

Sorry for the long wait...

I made some really good burgers tonight.

When I said really good, I mean really fucking good...
