The crisp, warm air was clear even without the smell of baked goods roaming around the neighborhood.

It was becoming dark, and with that, laughing children roaming around the streets hunting for candy.

The yard decorations for Halloween were lighting up as quickly as darkness became clear, and winds carried phantom whispers into the night.

"Do I have to wear this outfit, Sheila?" Seth asked for the 10th time of the night.

"Seth, you're just wearing this costume for one night; that's it!" She yelled, drawing attention from the other kids.

"It just feels strange. This hair keeps hitting my eyes," he whispered as Sheila's face turned red from the stares.

Sheila was straightening her glittered red skirt in place when her brother Max came from the front porch wearing a Michael mask and a tattered outfit with a plastic chainsaw.

Max didn't want to spend so much time looking after Sheila and Seth, concluding from the deep frown on his face.

"What are you guys dressed up as again?" Max asked with annoyance.

"Come on, max, I already told you. I'm the lion tamer, and he's the lion," Sheila commented with flair as both Max and Seth rolled their eyes.

"You could've told me I had to wear this costume before yesterday," Seth commented while blowing the lion's mane off his face as the hair irritated his eyes.

"Remember, you let me pick out a costume for you, and time was ticking," she said, pointing at a pretend watch on her wrist.

"How did you even get my parents to say yes?" Seth asked with shocked curiosity.

"My mom promised them to have someone walk you back to your house after the party," Sheila answered while placing her hat on her head.

"Sheila, that request shouldn't have been that easy with my parents. I should go home now before anything happens," he said, looking around the neighborhood as the children in various costumes walked around with excitement, holding their parents' hands along with their candy.

"Did you eat a leaf from the flood tree?" Sheila whispered with a tease.

"Of course, I ate a leaf from the blood tree, but I feel off tonight. Believe me; I wouldn't even be here if the moon were full." Seth said as he whispered back with a roll of his eyes.

"Seth, just let me know when you get tired, ok?" Sheila asked with concern.

"There's nothing to worry about man, we'll have you back home after the party," Max assured when he butted into the conversation.

"Besides, this is your first-time trick or treating; you'll need to know the ropes," Sheila whispered while dragging along a nervous Seth with Max taking the lead to the first house.

"Trick or treat!" Max and Sheila shouted as their neighbor, Mr. Pain, opened the door with a smile on his face.

"Hey kids, what are the costumes this year?" the neighbor asked with a short laugh.

"A lion, lion tamer, and a slasher, Mr. Pain, we're here for the usual pickup," Max answered while looking at the large bowl of candy sitting tempting inside the house.

"Who is this with ya'll?" Mr. Pain asked while bringing out the bowl filled with assorted chocolate; his eyes narrowed with the newcomer.

"His name is Seth, and my new friend," Sheila said with excitement.
