[P] represents the beginning of a retelling of a memory in Elena's current life.

Tension hung in the air around us. Thick enough to make my skin prickle, to make sitting still feel like it was the wrong thing to do.

We all knew what was next. Even if no one was particularly eager for the moment to come, it was already upon us.

Together we all sat in a loose circle around the fire. There was nothing left of it but glowing embers and a thin thread of smoke that the wind kept worrying at. The chatter of the morning had died off as we all finished eating.

Evangeline washed her bowl with the half melted snow just outside the circle of warmth the fire used to provide. Amalia picked at something stuck under her nails with this crease in her brow so prominent I worried if it could get stuck there. Dally separated the left over cooked meat into two piles, one decidedly larger than the other, humming decisively with each piece placed.

At one point Ruel got up, though I wasn't entirely sure when. I straightened from washing out my own bowl only to see my bag hung from the end of his fingers in front of me. My head tilted curiously even as I accepted my property back.

"Tripped over it on my way out this morning," Ruel explained without me having yet asked.

"Sorry," I answered automatically. Though I couldn't help but wonder how Ruel managed to trip over the one thing in his bag that wasn't his when his bag was filled with hazards in general.

"Perfect!" Dally perked up at the sight of my bag returned to my hands. "We can put your share in there!"

I looked between the mess inside the bag and the larger pile of food Dally was suddenly, eagerly, gathering up in his arms to give to me.

Wide eyed, "no-!" My hands went up to stop him from getting closer.

Thankfully Dally did stop, along with everyone else to see why I'd shouted with such urgency.

"Let me clean it out first." I breathed a sigh, "so no one gets sick."

Dally looked between my bag and the food in his arms a few times.

"Were you really about to give them the bigger pile?" Amalia crossed her arms as she asked, raising a brow at Dally.

He tilted his head at her, "of course! We can always get more for ourselves."

I quickly got to work on emptying out my bag. Grimacing at the damage done inside by the mixing of pain tonic and healing jelly. The best thing to do would be washing the bag- not that it could really be done here in the snow.
