[L1,2 or 3] represents the beginning of a flashback to one of Elena's past lives. There is more than one past life, which is why I have put up the numbers. Though, these memories are usually told as she sleeps and Elena herself cannot remember them.

[/L1,2 or 3] represents the end of a flashback to one of Elena's past lives.

[P] represents the beginning of a retelling of a memory in Elena's current life.

___

As far as I could see in any direction open water stretched out to meet the horizon. The sun was starting its descent from the sky, dyeing it from cyan to aquamarine. Already well past midday and we were still nowhere near land.

I've never traveled by portal for so long before. At least, not without the steady reassurance of somewhere to rest if I found myself too tired to continue.

Flying alongside me were Yugo and Adamai.

Before we left land Yugo, Adamai, and I had taken a long rest. Ate some food. Drank from our water. Generally got ready for crossing the sea with our abilities alone. Something none of us had actually attempted before.

I'd certainly thought of it before though.

There had been many days where I'd laid back to watch the stars with Moon at my side, contemplating my chances if I simply packed my bag, chose a direction, and just used my portals until I couldn't anymore. What made me hesitate was the high probability of death if I couldn't find land before I grew too tired to continue. Then I'd be reminded of Moon, of how the little monkey fussed and worried and cared for me each time that I blacked out from portal practice, or got badly sick from getting a medicine mixture wrong.

Moon had made being on that island bearable enough for me to hesitate in the first place.

Now here I was, doing the thing that I had never been desperate enough- low enough- to attempt.

On top of it I had Yugo and Adamai accompanying me.

It would have been crazy. Something that I wouldn't have even wanted to attempt anymore thanks to me having met Yugo and having since spent time with him and the others. Except crossing the sea wasn't nearly as dangerous now, as it would have been if I was by myself.

Our chances of death along the way were significantly reduced now, thanks to Adamai. The dragon could transform and he didn't mind carrying us on his back.

With that in mind we laid out a plan that is supposed to keep each of us from reaching exhaustion too quickly. Adamai would transform into a bug-creature and carry one of us on his back while the other used portals to travel. It was easier on Adamai this way, he was a stronger flyer than he was swimmer so he'd be able to keep it up longer even with someone on his back. If we didn't reach land before nightfall, and we were all exhausted, then Adamai would transform into the largest sea animal he could be and let Yugo and I sleep on his back while he floated along in the general direction we needed to go.

He told us that he was able to control his size, but it was far easier making himself smaller than he really was than forcing himself to be bigger. When it came to forcing himself to get bigger, a huge appetite came with it too. So Yugo and I would need to travel by ourselves for a bit while Adamai fished himself something to eat. If that came about, he'd catch up to us, and we'd take turns using portals again.
