As her hands softly rested on the back of Peter's neck, Nellie leaned into him as they swayed back and forth to the sound of the music humming throughout the gym. Lights were hung all around, and nearly everyone was dancing, whether it be with their dates or their friends. Homecoming, so far, was truly a magical night.
However, not all magical nights were destined to have a happy ending.
A ding sounded from Peter's phone, where he'd hidden it deep into the pocket of his black pants. Nellie leaned away from him as he retrieved it, both of them knowing it might be something important.
"What is it, Peter?" She inquired, standing on her tippy toes to take a peek as the screen.
Peter ran his hand over his face, frowning, "We never really talked about where I went the night you came through my window," he began.
Nellie frowned, as well, "Please tell me you don't have to leave."
His lack of response disappointed her. It was hard having to share Peter with the entire city, when she wanted him all to herself. She knew it was wrong of her to feel that way—selfish, even, but she couldn't help it.
"I let a bad guy go so I could get a little girl out of a bad situation, Nells. I thought I was doing the right thing, but now, I'm not so sure."
She could see guilt in his eyes, "What happened?"
"I wish I had time to explain," he shook his head, his jaw clenching, "but Mr. Stark needs me."
Nellie nodded understandingly, "You go do what you need to do, Peter. I'll save you a dance," she smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.
Peter leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, "You're incredible, Nellie."
She watched as he weaved in and out of their classmates before he disappeared through the gym doors, her heart heavy. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but it just wasn't the right time.
Will there ever be a right time? She shook the thought away as soon as it popped into her head. If she started thinking like that, she'd never be able to tell Peter that she loved him, even thought she wanted to--so desperately.
"Where's Peter?" MJ approached Nellie where she stood alone in the center of the dance floor.
She wore a beautiful white and yellow dress with her hair pulled back, and oddly enough, she had her arms linked with Ned.
"Oh," Nellie put on a smile, "he'll be back. He had to run home to help May with something."
Ned and MJ exchanged puzzled looks, but didn't seem to say anything more about it.
"C'mon, dance with us! We don't mind being a threesome." Ned smiled, wrapping his arms around both of the girls.
MJ shot him a look, "Ned, you know that hole in the middle of your face? I'm gonna need you to shut it right now before my foot does."
