Observation 8
Peter Parker is not who I thought he was.↯
The sluggish school day had finally drawn to a close and Nellie was all too quick to jump ship. As she reached May and Peter's apartment building, she felt immediately better than she would if she were returning to her foster home. Something about Aunt May was just that comforting, and Nellie hoped she'd be willing to have a talk about Peter.
He'd acted so strangely at school that morning and she just couldn't shake the feeling within her that he was struggling, but afraid—or maybe he just didn't want to—ask for help.
With a gentle flick of the wrist, Nellie laid three soft knocks on the Parker's door. Patiently, she waited for either May or Peter to greet her.
"Nellie," her voice was sweet as honey, "what a lovely surprise. Come on in!"
Of course, May pulled her into a hug.
"Hi, May. I was hoping you and I could talk for a moment, before I check on Peter." Nellie gave the woman a gentle squeeze before pulling back.
She was surprised to see that May's expression showed confusion with a hint of worry.
"What do you mean? Peter hasn't even gotten back from school yet."
Nellie sucked in a breath. She definitely didn't expect that.
Where could he be?
"Let's sit down." Nellie gestured for May to follow her into the quaint living room.
"What's going on? Peter was at school today, right?" She sounded like a worried mother—just as she was supposed to be.
Bad Breath Brenda would never care about Nellie the way May cared for Peter.
"Well, I'm a little worried about him. I was really concerned when I saw the bruise—"
May's eyes popped, "Bruise, what bruise? He was just fine before he went to sleep last night."
Now, Nellie's face was the one contorting into a look of confusion. She backtracked in her mind to be sure she was remembering Peter's words correctly.
"Peter definitely said he got jumped yesterday walking home from school. The bruise around his eye was pretty big, I'm not sure how you could've missed it. . ." She trailed off, her stomach twisting into knots.
