The Chases

It was really not the first time I'd invited Annabeth over.

It's just rare.

So you may look at this situation and think to yourself, Frederick Chase, it's been six years, and now you're inviting your grown-up daughter who is a demigoddess to a dinner?

That's exactly the question I'm asking myself as I'm saying, "Boys! Dress nicely! And behave yourselves when your sister's here." Helen took out a steaming delicious lasagna from the oven to complete the theme of Italian food, wearing a beautiful red dress that hung to mid-calf. I straightened my tie as I heard the doorbell ringing.

I opened the door to see a blonde haired girl standing in the doorway. Annabeth. She looked so different. Her hair had curled out more, her grey eyes happy but filled with horrible sights and pain. But she was still Annabeth. My Annabeth. Tears welled in my eyes but I forced them back and hugged her. There was a short "Uhmph!" behind her and mumbling about "Shadow travel". She hugged back, before pulling away and glancing up at an extremely handsome boy, standing roughly a head taller than her, with windswept raven black hair and sea-green eyes with the same look as Annabeth's. He was leanly muscular and was tan. I was sure I'd never met him before, but he looked very familiar. I ignored it. Annabeth wore a strapless grey dress going to her ankles with golden, strappy heels, and her curly blonde hair hung loosely around her shoulders. The boy wore an elegantly tailored black suit, with a dark blue, nearly black tie. He stuck his hand out.

"Mr.Chase. I'm Percy Jackson. We've met before." His name rang in my head. A boy, 14, trying to save Annabeth. I smiled. "Of course! It's nice to see you again Percy." I shook his hand before leading the way to the table, where Helen, Bobby, and Matthew were seated. Helen's lips were pursed and her eyes were nervous. She rose. "Annabeth....I'm so sorry about how I treated you. I was jealous of how you looked, and how you seemed to be perfect, even with the monster attacks. Can you... can you forgive me?" Annabeth seemed to think, before nodding and hugging Helen. I introduced Percy, who Helen liked and Annabeth kissed her brother's heads.

As we talked after a delicious dinner, only one of Percy and Annabeth's hands were on the table. I glanced suspiciously at it but not wanting to ruin the vibe, I stayed neutral. Bobby and Matthew grinned at each other, "Annabeth, do you guys like each other?" Annabeth laughed. "Of course!" Percy grinned, adding in, "We've known each other since we were twelve-" He was interrupted by the boys, "Are you guys dating?" The pair turned red. "No." They replied, seeming horrified at the idea. Annabeth said that they were going to get unpacked as they were staying the night. Helen started to clean up and I went up to ask if they needed anything. I almost fell over at what I saw.

Percy and Annabeth were in the bedroom. Annabeth was on Percy's lap, and they were kissing.

They said they weren't dating! Anger bubbled up in me. What right did Percy have? Annabeth? How could they? "Annabeth?" I said, betrayal and anger clear in my voice. The pair jumped apart, their faces red. "Dad." She said, surprisingly calm. It took all my will not to snap at them to get the hell out of my house. Percy's sea-green eyes fixed on me and gained a steely look. His body tensed into a defensive stance in front of Annabeth, who had her arms crossed and vaguely bored look on her face.

I made the point. "You lied to me." She snorted. "No, I was totally honest with you and Bobby and Matthew and Helen." I glared at her and Percy.  Percy raised an eyebrow. "You said you guys weren't dating! I didn't give you my permission, Annabeth, and so you've either gotta break up with him or get the hell out-"  I was cut off as a blur of black hair pinned me to the wall, sea-green eyes darkening to the point where they were nearly the color of the sea at night. I tried glaring into them but his eyes made me see relentless coastlines being battered and destroyed, I saw ships being overturned in waves and tossed mercilessly onto rocks, and I saw myself, down in the depths of the ocean, getting deeper, deeper and deeper...

"Listen here, Mr. Chase. I expected a lot more from a father who invited his daughter over as an apology. Heck, your wife, the one who neglected Annabeth for years was a hell of a lot nicer than you. Needless to say, I'm disappointed." He let go and I slid to the floor, shell-shocked. Annabeth walked over and knelt by me. I thought she was going to do what was right. "Listen, Annabeth, do what you know is right. I don't give a damn about how many times he saved anybody, I don't approve, and you need to break up with him."

She glared at me, and I thought I saw a kind of grey fire in her eyes, a warrior's fire, defiant and angry. She leaned in close. "Don't. Ever. Threaten my boyfriend ever again." With a low, "I'm sorry," she punched me in the side as water from the bathroom enveloped me. The last thing I saw was them grabbing their bags and storming out before I fell into darkness' welcoming arms.

Helen was putting the boys to bed and came out the door to see Percy and Annabeth storming out the door. Annabeth had some tears in her eyes and Percy held her hand and murmured to her. She strained to listen, she honestly was sorry for what she did and wanted to help.

"-I can't believe him! I come over for dinner as a sign I forgave him and now he doesn't approve of you and me being together! I-"

"Annabeth." Percy just said her name. Helen peeked around the corner. Her tearful gray eyes swung up to meet his as he cupped her face."Hey, it doesn't matter whether he approves of me or not. But he can't threaten you like that." A tear slid down her face. "But he's my dad! You're my boyfriend! I love you! He had no right to do that. I don't want..." She collected herself more. "I don't want to lose either of you again. It's not fair."

"It's okay, Annabeth. No matter what he says, he's still your father. He-" He paused to hug Annabeth. "He still loves you. So do I. Nothing will change that. Do you hear me?" He leaned in. "Nothing."

They kissed, and Annabeth pulled back, smiling slightly. "What about you Seaweed Brain? You were angry." He turned red. "I-uh-but-he-" Annabeth punched him lightly as Helen came in. "Are you okay?" She asked them. Annabeth nodded. "I'm sorry we had to leave so soon. Dad-he just-" Helen nodded. "It's okay. Just know." She smiled at Annabeth and for the first time Annabeth felt like this was home, "Just know you'll always have a home here."

They walked through the door and as they left Helen said loudly, "Remember to invite us to your wedding!"

The pair turned red and mumbled. Helen smiled before going back into the house. Still blushing, Annabeth looked up at Percy."Thank you." He squeezed her hand. "Of course, Wise Girl." They walked along the streets to Mrs. O'Leary, who howled happily as they shadow-traveled towards Percy's house, to have a movie night, and of course, blue cookies.

Well, I hope you guys liked that. It's been a while and you guys deserve to have this update more than I can say. Thank you so much for all of your constant support on my books and through hard times. I really do have a family here.
