By the time I got home, I was pumped with what I may have found. My gut told me that I had something here; a new lead to a case that had been cold for longer than most. I practically burst through the door and instantly moved to the study. I didn’t even notice Greg and Nick drinking coffee in the kitchen when I arrived at the house.
“Pregnant woman waddling at high speed.” Nick commented peeking his head around the doorway to watch me make my way up the stairs.
“Miks?” Greg put his mug down and followed me with Nick not far behind him.
In the study, I sat at the desk and opened the files that had been in my bag.
“What happened?” Asked my husband, his hand resting on my shoulder to get my attention.
“Did your mom tell you something?” Nick questioned. Clearly Greg had filled him in on my plan whilst I had been out.
“No, but she gave me something.” I placed the case and the note on the desk and pulled out a pair of latex gloves, offering the box to the two men who eagerly pulled them on, their own curiosity sparked by the case that had appeared.
“What is it?” Greg asked in hushed tones as I opened out the note and placed it on the desk next to the teal case.
Smiling, I revealed the item of jewellery to the men and studied their reactions.
“It’s a necklace?” Nick said, unsure about what he was looking at.
“A necklace my dad hid before he was killed. He hid it and left for me with this note.” Greg picked it up and read it before handing it to Nick.
“What do you think it means?” He asked, looking at me with worried eyes.
“I haven’t got a clue, but it’s something, right? It’s one thing that connects me and my dad; something he handed down to me.”
“But why would a drug gang try to kill you for this?” Nick asked, gently pulling the necklace from the case and looking at it thoroughly.
“That’s what I need to find out. I’m wondering if this necklace had value to the gang at the time. It clearly doesn’t contain any hidden drugs, but maybe there’s something more to it than that. My dad ratted out the drug smuggling deals to the LVPD so if this necklace was linked to those crimes then surely he would’ve handed it over too and not left it with this note for me.”
“Answers for unasked questions? It still doesn’t seem to make any sense.” Nick said with a sigh as he scratched the top of his head.
“You weren’t even born.” Greg added, confused even more.
“I know. It seems to be a long shot, but I can’t help think that this means something.”
“Come on then, what are you thinking?” Nick perched on the sofa bed and I spun around in the chair to face them both.
“I don’t know.” I sighed, rubbing my temples.
“Well, let’s look at this from a professional point of view. What unasked questions could he mean?” Greg said, grabbing a notepad and pen.
“What the hell is this necklace?” Nick said, stumped after a few moments of silence.
“No. Think about it, this was early eighties, the drug scene and the gang violence was at an all time high. The police would’ve been making it their main focus to crack down on it and end it all. Unasked questions could be something completely unrelated to the drug scene.” I said, speaking my thoughts aloud.
“Go on Miks.”
“If the police were hell bent on cleaning up the streets of junkies and dealers then maybe they overlooked something more important, something that they wouldn’t have considered a priority at the time.”
“Like?” Nick encouraged.
“I don’t know. We’d need to look at the crimes that took place back in ‘83 that weren’t centred around drugs but still had the potential of gang involvement.” I said, resting my hand back on my stomach.
“So you definitely think his death had nothing to do with drugs?” Nick asked, looking for certain clarification.
“They came after me twenty five years after they got revenge on my dad for being a rat. If it was just about getting revenge then why deliberately track me down and put two bullets in me?” I pointed out, squeezing Greg’s hand when I saw him wince.
“Good point. So do you think they sent Kyle Cavendish after you for this necklace?” Nick asked, really thinking like the CSI he was.
“It’s the only thing that makes sense so far. Maybe not specifically the necklace but what it stands for. It could be the key to breaking another case wide open as well as this one.”
“I think this is enough to take to Grissom and get his opinion.” Greg smirked and I could see the relief in his eyes that finally there was progress in the case that had been putting strain on our relationship that I hadn’t even noticed until now, when I saw the weight vanish from his shoulders.
