"What are you trying to hide by rushing out of the office?" he jokingly asks, jogging to catch up to me.
"I don't know what you mean." I say.
"I saw you looking at her monitor, waiting for those," he leans in close, "dirty scenes."
I backhand him in the face as hard as I can.
It must've hurt, because he stopped walking with me. I hear some laughs behind me so I stop and turn around to see an asian and a white guy walking with him, making fun of him because I hit him. They're obviously good friends, so I continue walking to the cafeteria, which is easy when the halls are empty.
"Hey, you girl!" a friendly voice calls out to me. I keep walking. I don't want any business with those guys.
Out of nowhere, an arm slides around my waist.
"Hey, why are you ignoring me like that?" the white guy says again.
He looks at the binders and books I'm carrying.
"Hey, you're reading My Ántonia too? I hated that book when I read it, but after I realized it was totally worth it."
"Oh," I say, trying not to flush like a tomato, "I think it's really good, it's one of my favorite books."
The guy turns around back at the other two. "Hey, Jace! I'm already better friends with you than you were!" he shouts, kind of hurting my ears.
"Shut up, man." Jace, the boy from my class calls back.
"Anyway, my name's Cameron, but everyone calls me Cam." Cam says. "Between you and me, I'm a huge nerd. I love books, video games, robotics, and programming."
I get excited for a moment. He sounds just like me.
"He's lying! He just wants to get in your pants." The asian guy calls up to me.
"Ah, don't mind them. They're just jealous they don't meet cool girls like you as I do, they only get the thots." he chuckles. His laugh is kind of cute.
"Anyways, what's your name?" he asks me.
"Alliah. Alliah Kyung-Sook." I say, in some sort of embarrassed manner.
"Kyung-Sook? So you're Korean?"
"Yeah, my mom is, my dad is white."
The four keep chatting for a while. It seems to take forever to get to the cafeteria.
"Hey Cam," the asian guy butts in, "are you ever going to move your arm? She looks kind of uncomfortable with you holding her."
"Ah shit, sorry Alliah. Kita is right, do you want me to move?"
"No, it's fine."
We finally make it to the cafeteria and I take a seat between Jace on my left and Cam on my right. Jace and Kita goes straight for the chicken sandwich lines, but Cam hangs back.
"I can grab you a slice of pizza if you want." he offers.
"That would be great."
He gets in the closest line and is immediately approached by two girls. One is dressed like she is a yoga instructor, and the other wears a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. From only a couple of yards away, I can tell they're trying way too hard to flirt with him. He subtly makes them stand where he can see me and I can see him, and catches my eye. He obviously needs saving.
Somehow over pure eye contact, we devise a plan.
