"So is she tall?" I ask Jace, who isn't even facing me at this point. I've been annoying him all period about who he's dating, but I haven't gotten a clue.

"Do your work." he says back.

"I'm already done."

"Well I'm not, so leave me alone."

I can't get anything out of this guy. I have to annoy him more, maybe he'll crack.

"Is she goth like you?"

"One, I'm not goth. Two, she's more glam than gloom."

"So she's a Fake?" Fakes are what students at Markwood High School calls the popular girls who act the same as each other, only date guys that are jocks, seem to be super friendly, and are absolute thots.

He goes silent. "So she is one." I conclude aloud. I wouldn't think of him as a guy to date a Fake, but they can be very manipulative at times. Whoever she is probably just wants him for his test scores.

"I don't like people calling her that." he says after a while. "Yes, she started hanging out with all of the Fakes this year, but it's only been a month; she doesn't even act like them." He sounds  very defensive, though it also sounds like he's tired of defending.

I try to think of all of the Fakes I've heard about.

Who has just been welcomed as a Fake?

"Erica?" I guess, causing him to take a sharp inhale. "What?"

"How the actual hell did you guess her so quick?"

"Everyone was talking about her when she became a Fake a little while ago. She was forced to dye the tips of her hair teal by the other Fakes to be 'initiated.'"

"People don't even know about the real Erica anymore. She used to be really nice and sweet, but now she acts like a thot just like the rest of them." he sighs. "She hasn't talked to me in a while."

"But you're still together? Hasn't she cut you off?"

"Yeah, we're still together, and she hasn't necessarily cut me off. She just hasn't texted me in a couple of days, and she's been avoiding me at lunch for a while now."

"Well, do you still like her?" I ask.

He sighs. "It's hard to tell. I think I do, but I know it's not mutual anymore if I do."
