The garage is empty when the door finally crawls open. That means she isn't home. I sigh with relief.
I get inside and hang up my bag. The kitchen smells like cookies; my mom's favorite ones to bake, her famous oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Looking at the oven it looks like it just got turned off. I open the door and see a dozen beautiful, golden brown cookies. Using an oven mitt I carefully take the pan out of the oven. They smell amazing, I can almost smell each ingredient in each one. I poke the top of one of the cookies and feel my finger make a dent into it. Doughy, just as I like them.
She's either finally in a good mood for once or something very bad happened.
I grab a plate and put three of the smallest on. I check my phone while I'm tiptoeing into my room. I put my new friends' phone numbers into my phone and started a group chat with them, but they've been silent ever since I've gotten home. I kick open my bedroom door and fall into my bed, carefully to not drop any of my cookies.
I scroll through YouTube for a bit but don't find anything interesting to watch. Finally someone says something in the group chat.
Kita: hey do any of you guys have GroupTime?
What the heck is GroupTime?
Cam: uh no what's that
Jace: tbh sounds like some made-up bs
Kita: nah bros it's a video chat thing and you can have multiple people on it!
Jace: still sounds like bs
Cam: yeah isn't it called Houseparty or some crap?
Kita: well yeah
Kita: but that's something elseeee
Kita: idk the difference but I already have GroupTime so can you guys get it so we can talk together?
Jace: you're lucky I'm bored bro
Cam: ay once you sign in text your username
Cam: Alliah you got that?
I nearly choke on my first cookie. I forgot to respond to anything during their conversation. I'll wait to eat the cookies.
Alliah: yeah I gotchu
We all download GroupTime and start to make our accounts. Kita explained to us that we can only GroupTime people who we've added and who added us back. We can also text with it as a group and to individual people and as groups, and video chat with just one person instead of as a group.
Kita: ok mine's haveakitakat
Jace: lmao 'Have a Kita Kat' wth
Jace: mine's jaceyboi
Alliah: wow you make fun of KitaKat and then name yourself Jacey Boi?
Jace: stfu
Cam: add me I'm alilbean
Alliah: lol A Lil Bean, Cam?
Cam: hey don't judge me
Alliah: I'll try not to
Alliah: mine is just akyung
Jace: smh basic
Alliah: sorry mine isn't as creative as yours, jaceyboi
We all add each other and creat a group that we called "The Mansion", where we could text each other in and video chat as a group, or only a couple of us at a time.
We start a group video chat and I'm hit with a rush of anxiety. I've never video chatted with anyone, ever. I haven't even called anyone who isn't in my family. Suddenly four boxes appear on the screen, and I'm filling one of them. Kita is in the top left corner, Jace is above me, and Cam is to my left.
It's weird seeing myself on the screen. I think a phone cameras hate me. My eyes look too small and dead, my nose looks too wide, face looks too long and my cheeks look too puffy. I look ugly.
Compared to me, the guys look like models, but I guess anyone would.
