His face gets pink and he pushes himself up off of the ground, focusing his eyes on a mushed piece of gum by his feet. "I was thinking we could go find Jace and Erica. Neither me nor Cam know where they went, and they still haven't come back to the table. Do you want to come with me?"
I sigh. I'm too tired for this. "Yeah, sure."
We wander the halls for a while in an awkward silence. Occasionally he'd scratch the back of his neck and cough.
Maybe twenty minutes go by and we still hadn't seen anything. "Where would he be?" I ask, mostly talking to myself, but Kita answers anyway. "I honestly don't know, do you?"
I stop walking for a dramatic effect and he turns around. "You do notice I just started talking to you guys yesterday, right?"
"Oh, yeah, right. Sorry." he facepalms and shakes his head. "It just feels like you've kind of been with us for a while."
"Yeah, I do too." he looks surprised. "Cam must be comfortable with me if he talks about girls like that around me."
"Shit," he mumbles, "I'm sorry you had to see him like that." Kita then starts rambling about Cam's life outside of school but then stops himself. "I'm ranting again aren't I?"
"Yeah, but I like listening to people who talk a lot. Hearing people's thoughts is really fun for me."
He turns back around and starts walking away. "Then you'll love me."
"Hey! Where are you going?" I yell after him as he disappears from around a corner. I power walk to where he was and I'm faced with tow hallways. One left and one right. I'm pretty sure he went to the right, so I head down that way.
I've been down this hallway before. It's the Science area of the school and I can hear students chattering and squealing, so I'm assuming they're doing an experiment in one of the classes. "Kita?" I whisper as loud as I can, which is kind of paradoxical. "Where did you go?"
I turn another corner and he's right there.
I scream and he tries to cover my mouth. "Ali we're right outside of Ms. Luina's room! She'll kill us if she sees us out of class."
"Well you scared me! I'm not in the wrong!"
I hear a door shut behind us and I turn to see a guy walking out of class.
He looks like one of those kids who barely lasts a week in school before he's suspended. His hair is all messy but still looks like he put a gallon of gel in it. He's wearing a plain white T-shirt that's tucked into a pair of black jeans. Stereotypical 'rebel' outfit. He looks Hispanic, but his eyes shine a dark green. He may've been cute if he actually tried.
"'Sup August." Kita says casually, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"'Sup." August replies.
They size each other up and I see a Kita that I'd think he would never be. Threatening.
"Who's this?"
"Alliah. She's been sitting with us lately."
August sizes me up, and I'm suddenly immediately self conscious about my body. What will he criticise? My hair, my face, my clothes, how skinny I am, how flat I am?
"Is she the thot who kissed Cam yesterday?" he leans in, too close to my face. His breath smells like month old cheese. "How cute."
"Hey, back up, bud." Kita pushes him away by the chest and steps between us.
"Aw, scrawny boy is being all tough?"
I notice Kita's fists clench. I may have just met him, but this guy is already annoying the crap out of me. I step out from behind Kita. "Can you fuck off, please?"
He looks shocked, but it quickly turns to anger. "What did you say, bitch?"
"Hey, hey, guys please don't do this." Kita turns back into the moderator I met him as.
"Cam's new hoe is more of a prick than the last one, ain't she?"
Right as I feel like I'm about to punch him, but then a door opens.
"What are you three doing?" a scratchy voice scolds.
August and I are frozen, but luckily Kita saves the situation.
"I was going to the library from lunch and I see that this guy is harassing my friend, Alliah, so I tried to step in. I'm sorry if we caused a ruckus."
"Excuse me? I didn't do anything!" exclaims August.
"Honey, was August bothering you?" the teacher's tone changes. I don't look at her though, I instead try to start crying, hiding my face and leaning into Kita. I nod slowly.
"We need to talk, young man." she says to August.
"Yes ma'am."
"You two, please go back to your classes or wherever."
"Thank you Ms. Luina."
Kita and I walk away and he wraps his arm around my shoulders. We slowly walk away, pretending to be distraught. I rest my head on his shoulder and he rubs my arm. It takes us a little while to get to a corner where they can't hear or see us anymore. Immediately after we get out of sight we disconnect and step a foot away from each other.
"I never thought you'd be one to confront someone like that."
"I act differently around different people."
"Yeah, I can tell." We both laugh and jab each other in the stomach.
"Hey lovebirds, where are you guys going?" a familiar voice says from behind us. It's Jace.
