Monday 17th February
I set an alarm for 6:30 but woke up on my own just before it went off. Weird, I usually love to sleep. I quickly jumped in the shower, not taking too long, Isaac wanted me to meet his friends before practice. Once I’ve showered I throw on my new jeans, a singlet with my leather jacket and my cons. By the time I get down stairs its 6:50 so I quickly grab some toast and Mom drives me to school on her way to work.
I get out the car to see Isaac leaning against a pole grinning,
“So you came.”, he says still grinning.
“Yeah, well maybe you were right about meeting new people. And I wasn’t going to just show you up, was I?”, we head over to the lacrosse field with a half hour to spare before practice officially starts, although most of the boys are already warming up. Isaacs’s friends are all huddled together when we get to them.
“Hey guys, this is my friend Liz.”, Isaac says with his arm around my shoulders. He looks at me and points to everyone going around the circle, “Scott, Allison, Lydia, Aiden, Ethan, Danny and Stiles who I’ve heard you’ve already met”, he says chuckling. Stiles is the first to say anything,
“Hey it’s, uh, nice to see you again.”
“Yeah same, I promise not to barge into you this time”, I laugh. All except Lydia and Aiden, who I’m assuming left to go make out, go to sit on the bleachers. Danny and Ethan leave not long after that, and Isaac fills me in about his group,
“Well I’m sure you’ve already noticed Lydia and Aiden are a thing”
“Yeah not that hard to miss”, I say laughing.
“Oh and Ethan and Danny”, he continues. At first I’m surprised but then I think about how close they were standing together before and how Danny was totally checking Ethan’s ass out as we walked up to the bleachers. I inwardly laugh at myself for being surprised at all.
“Isaac I think you forgot to mention Allison and I?”, Scott says with an eyebrow cocked.
“Shut up Scott I was getting there”, Isaac says playfully punching Scott’s arm. We all sit and chat and laugh about things until we hear coaches voice,
“C’MON BOYS GET YOUR ASSES ON THE FIELD, WE HAVE A BIG GAME COMING UP.” Everyone gets up and goes down to the field except Isaac,
“Hey the game, on Saturday, did you wanna come? There’s a par-“, he gets cut off.
“LAHEY GET DOWN HERE AND PLAY WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND LATER”, couch yells at Isaac. We both look at each other and blush before he goes down to the field. I see Stiles smiling, his eyes darting back and forth between Isaac and I before he starts whispering in Isaac’s ear and Isaac punches his shoulder, just a little harder than playful and Stiles flinches but laughs, throwing his head back because he thinks he’s so funny.
I watch them practice, never actually realizing how hard lacrosse is to play or how much effort they put into it. I see Scott make some amazing shots, Isaac’s in goal so Scott teases him playfully. Watching Stiles try and score is hilarious, I think its nerves because every time he misses he yells out various profanities. In his last shot he trips before even trying to score and I can’t help but laugh, he turns and smiles at me, playfully telling me to shut up.
“Make me!”, I yell back at him. And he winks, next thing I know he’s getting another light punch on the arm from Isaac.
When practice finishes I go onto the field congratulating Scott on the amazing shots he got past Isaac and Isaac looks a little annoyed so I turn and whack him saying,
“Oh lighten up I’m joking”. He laughs at that and then Allison follows me to my locker.
“I’ll go with you Liz, considering Lydia’s doing who knows what”, Allison tells me smiling. We both start laughing, while I grab my books I ask her,
“Hey Allison, can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, yeah of course. Is it about Isaac?”, she says smirking at me
“Well yeah actually. Just is- is he the kinda guy that gives out hugs? Like you know good-bye hugs and stuff like that”, I finish quietly.
“Ooooh”, she coos, “Well, I’ve never gotten a hug from Isaac, that’s for sure. Actually, now that you say it the only time I’ve ever seen Isaac hug anyone is when Scott gets really excited and bear hugs him”, she says laughing clearly thinking about Scott.
“Oh- Well, right okay.”, I say slightly taken aback. Allison must pick up on my voice because her eyebrows shoot up and she says excitedly,
“Why? Did Isaac hug you? When? Oooh tell me.”
“Allison it’s no big deal he just hugged me when I was leaving his place the other night. I don’t think he meant anything of it.”, I tell her. She gets the hint that it’s not something I want to drag on about so she drops the topic and we make our way over to her locker only to see Scott leaning up against it,
“I guess this is my cue to leave”, I say to them both with an eyebrow raised at Scott.
“No, you don’t ha-“, Allison starts.
“No really I have Chem first, don’t want to give Harris a reason to eat my soul”, I tell her and she chuckles.
The rest of the day goes by pretty slowly, I sit with my own friends at lunch not wanting to seem like I’m intruding on Isaac’s group.
“Hey where were you this morning Liz?’, Jake asks stuffing his face.
“Oh, I was at lacrosse practice with a friend.”, I say quietly. They all look at me with their mouths slightly agape.
“What? With who?”, Chloe says, she starts to smile at me and I know what they’re all thinking.
“I- Isaac Lahey, we used to be good friends when we were younger. He invited me to go watch, that’s all”, I tell them, “and before any of you voice what you’re all thinking, Isaac’s just a friend, plus he’s a senior anyways.”, I realise it was probably a mistake to mention that when all their mouths drop even further.
“A senior?”
“Yes, now can we talk about something else”, I say trying not to smile. They all nod and Ben jumps into conversation about that movie we went to see and before I know it the bells going off signalling it’s time to go to class.
