It was quite a relief when I was finally released from the infirmary. As embarrassing as it was, to really move around, I had the choice between being carried or a wheelchair until I was up to par. It was obviously the wheelchair which I chose. Now, I wasn't an invalid by any means, but I couldn't move too far without tiring myself out still.
And food? Mostly it was something like specially formulated smoothies to be easy on my system but give the proper amount of nutrients needed for my body to function. It wasn't too bad, though I missed actually chewing my food and the aftertaste sucked big time. Aside from that? Well, I was still stuck here, alive, among creatures that were supposed to be myth... So yeah.
At this moment, I was seated in one of the armchairs in that Alpha's office while he sat on the couch, angled to face me. Sadly, my wheelchair also happened to be resting not too far away.
"So, it seems that we never started out on the right foot," Alpha Dee starts while I roll my eyes internally at the understatement.
"Yeah, considering the fact that not only was I not supposed to even be turned but also that someone, or ones tried to kill me," I surprised myself by just how affected I still was from it. "I was thrust into this and just expected to go with it, but I'm my own person and had my own life!"
I was further surprised that Alpha Guy stayed calm during my whole outburst, "As we said before, humans that are turned have had a lot of time to learn our ways and what to expect. Once you're turned, you no longer smell of human but of family. As family, it's mostly a given that you already know everything and should fit in fine but, considering how this came about, this was not the case and no one was ready for it."
I crossed my arms and huffed, wondering if it would just be more of the same. I could almost hear the repeated, 'conform, conform, conform,' and 'drink the kool aid'. For a pack of wolves, their term of 'freedom' sure seemed to be fairly limited.
He sighed, which had me lifting my eyebrows a bit. He didn't seem as stoic and impenetrable as usual, "And, I do admit that many of us haven't been very successful for a while now at turning humans... Though now it's found that our high mortality rate was actually from being purposely killed than an unsuccessful transformation."
My eyes widened at the transparency while he continued, "And... I do apologize for everything that has happened to you so far. We've been drawing blood from you not only to check how your system is but also to isolate the chemicals still in your system and see if we can figure out what happened. While it seems you are growing faster, it seems that you'll still be stuck like this for a while."
"What about the crazy guy that ran us over, what about the kid I saved, what about the group of people that had been poisoning people?" What did I get thrown into?
"That... Is pretty classified," Alpha La Di Da just crushed my hopes of transparency.
"I need to know, please, anything you can tell me... Alpha Darien."
"Yes, I know. You of all people should, right?" I watched as he gritted his teethe, vaguely snarling, "But we aren't like humans, instinct is ingrained in us too. In your current... Condition, treating you as anything more than a child that needs to be cared for and protected is going against our instincts... But we'll try; I'll try."
"As you know, there are all different types of humans, and similarly there are different types of lycans. Most live as we do, some decide to live 'naturally' in the wild, some decide to live outside of the packs but must follow certain rules to do so as they're still usually on pack territory and lastly... Some are against us. Some think that we're too complacent- that we should become a united force. Some believe that we shouldn't live in hiding any more and should actually be above the dominate race. And as for these doctors and such... We aren't sure yet."
I personally wondered if perhaps they were trying to weaken the pack to either take it over and or make them believe they need something from them in order to turn anyone again, "And that driver?"
"He was one of the crazy ones that knew that Gryffon was my baby brother... Death threats are not unheard of," the mighty alpha ran his hands through his hair, "He's in a neighboring pack right now with friends."
"Wait," I just thought of something that seemed off. "How was your brother outside of pack lands?"
"Field trip. Ridiculous, right?" His laugh was rough with hidden emotion. "The one time I let him, really let him out of my sight; outside of my view. Land. And he's almost killed. Killed! And then what do I tell my parents? How can I so easily face my pack if I can't take care of someone that's almost a piece of me?"
I quietly listened, wide-eyed, at the disclosure. He scrubbed his face before abruptly standing and walking to his office desk, collecting a couple pieces of paper. My brain was acting like sand, thoughts, questions and ideas leaking through my fingers as time passed.
"Okay, I have some paperwork to go over with you," He sat back down, nothing like he was a moment ago. "There are a couple things that I have to let you know are impossible right now, no matter what you might wish to happen."
I looked down at the papers, eyes scanning the extensive rules and regulations of the pack, and then the document listing off my own restrictions and what specifically had been put into place on me, "What am I looking at- more appropriately, why am I looking at this?"
"I thought about it for a long time, and I finally came up with a type of compromise that we both could handle," He steepled his fingers. "We'll go over these items together and talk about what would be fair for both parties. We'll express our sides and go from there."
It sounded promising, the documents looking like dark constricting snakes, but there was no doubt that what sounded easy was anything but. I knew now what an alpha was like, and gaining anything would be a constant uphill battle. We'd both probably end up at each other's throats sooner rather than later... And I was still stuck in the same room as him.
This wouldn't do, "May I suggest something?"
He gave me the floor, "I'd actually like to go over this myself and make some notes before we continue this train of thought. Otherwise, I can just imagine the shit that will go down... Hit the fan, hit another fan and cause a bloodbath. The only thing I'd like to touch on is the living arrangements."
"You know that you can't be on your own. It's not safe."
I ducked in before he could continue and turn it into a lecture, "I know that, and I know that I definitely don't wanna bunk with the twins. Almost anything but that. What I would like is a cot or some kind of separation. It's weird sleeping with a dude daily."
"I suppose I could get a small bed in there..."
"I also get to choose what I'll wear and only be given assistance if I ask for it."
"Or if you're in a dangerous position."
I sighed, "Sure. Or if I'm in danger."
"Anything else before I send you back to the twins?"
I groaned, "I wish, but for now, no."
"Then I suppose I'll see you at supper."
