Emma’s POV
“Go behind the bar,” Jeremy stated taking the cloth from my hand.
“I can’t I’m underage Jeremy. We’re both underage, so I’m going to carry on doing my job legally,” I explained taking the cloth back.
“Well so is Matt, but he still does it,” He smirked.
I rolled my eyes with a frown. I took off my apron handing it to him with the cloth, before taking my place behind the bar. Sadly my parents couldn’t support their children, meaning my brother and I had to work to be able to afford necessities. It wasn’t as if we were really young as he’s eighteen and I’m sixteen, just we should have to work to feed ourselves whilst our parents are God knows where.
Both of us worked at the Mystic Grill with our best friend Jeremy. I didn’t mind working there though. It was easy money and I got to spend all of my working hours with my best friend and my brother who was basically my best friend too.
No one was sat at the bar when I started working behind the bar, but within a few moments of being stood there, two men sat down on the stools in front of it.
“Hello, what can I get you?” I smiled attempting to be nice.
One of the men was Klaus the evil hybrid that wanted to kill everyone and the other I hadn’t seen before, but Klaus didn’t really deserve me being polite to him.
“Can we have two bourbons please, love?” Klaus smiled back cockily.
I rolled my eyes at his attempt to charm me. He was kind of attractive but his personality definitely let him down.
Quickly I got their drinks and handed them to the two men.
“Don’t call me love. Using empty pet names doesn’t take back what you’ve done to this town,” I frowned leaning my elbows onto the bar, “so who are you, another psycho original or a suicidal minion, although the first generally becomes the latter?”
“I’m Kol Mikaelson darling his-“ he said jutting out his thumb towards Klaus, “younger half-brother, and you are?”
“I’m Emma Donavon, the only one in this town who actually tolerates your brother as she is considered the young naïve human who doesn’t understand anything. But I take vervain and I know all about you, no matter how often my brother gets vampires to compel me to forget, so what are you doing in this town now, and not when Klaus and Elijah first arrived?” I smiled softly.
Matt had always been over protective of me, but more so since the death of our sister. He never wanted me to be in trouble which I understood, and that was the only part that seemingly made him a good brother and not a prison warden. I didn’t like not knowing what was going on in the town, and I was a curious girl, meaning I always needed to know what was going on.
I had become close friends with Elijah, Klaus’ older brother and I tolerated Klaus. No one else liked him, mainly due to him trying to kill everyone or at least psychologically damaging them. Just if and when he targeted me; I would be wise about it as he didn’t scare me.
“I was pre-occupied being locked up in a casket with a dagger through my chest. You are quite cocky for such a little girl do you know about the danger we could put you in?” Kol smirked.
“Brother, you obviously don’t know young Emma very well. She is a very curious child and doesn’t think about danger but is interested in everything,” Klaus smiled at me, “Aren’t you Em? I do believe you befriended my brother just to get into my home to figure out whether I was the hybrid you had heard of.”
“Of course not Klaus don’t try and make yourself feel special. Elijah is a very honourable and moral man, who I am glad to be friends with; just it came with access to your home. It was a win-win situation. But Klaus you have killed Elena, toyed with Caroline, destroyed Stefan, manipulated Katherine, stolen Tyler’s freedom and put my best friend, my brother and me into grave danger. I only find it fair that I get to know my destined enemies,” I shrugged with a smirk.
The three of us talked for a while longer, whilst Jeremy glared at me as he cleaned tables. Every time I saw him frown at me, I automatically rolled my eyes in response.
Suddenly a hand tapped me on the shoulder causing me to turn to see my older brother frowning at me.
“Em can I have a word?” Matt frowned with gritted teeth, as he glared at the two men.
“Of course brother,” I shrugged following him away from the bar.
I knew he was pulling me away from the bar so that the two men couldn’t hear us, but I knew they could as they were vampires and their hearing was rather impeccable.
“Why are you talking to them Emma, they are way too old for you?” he growled.
“Matty, they’re customers, not future boyfriends. Do I have to avoid all customers over a certain age, or only the attractive supernatural ones you consider as threatening? Anyway if I did see interest in them I’m sure I’d get away with it. Tyler did try to get off with our Mother, Vicki did have sex with Damon Salvatore and I’m sure there were many other people who are in relationships with large age differences and I’m sure there are many more involving vampires,” I frowned.
It wasn’t that I like either of them, I liked another person and I certainly wasn’t going to tell Matt about that.
“How did you know about them?” He questioned.
“I know more than you could ever imagine Matt. I may be your innocent baby sister but you can’t protect me from this forever, and if you try it’ll just get worse. Just let the leash extend, so I can make a few mistakes and learn from them. I’m sixteen Matt and that means you shouldn’t try to keep me coddled all the time. I need to get back to work,” I sighed with a shrug walking back to the bar.
“You heard that all didn’t you?” I frowned.
“Yep,” they both chuckled.
Matt’s POV
I had quickly rushed out of work and to the Salvatore boarding house, knowing there was a better chance Elena would be here than at her own home. Hastily I pounded my fist against the door until Damon opened it.
“What’s wrong with you?” he chuckled.
“Elena and Stefan are here right?” I questioned still breathing heavily from practically running here.
“Yeah why?” he asked raising an eyebrow.
I literally ran down to the living area where the pair was sat whilst Damon followed me.
“Matt are you okay?” Elena asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine but this is important,” I sighed, “Emma knows everything. She’s known it all for a while. She’s acting out because I kept it from her. At the moment she is sat in the grill talking to Klaus and his brother.”
“You shouldn’t have kept it from her. But either way she would have wanted to know as much as she could. They are the best source of information about themselves. Also she’s best friends with Jeremy who is just as inquisitive; they are a terrible pair to go against. I learnt from my mistakes with Jer. Just let her be, and make sure she knows you care and you want her safe, but don’t go all crazy big brother on her,” Elena smiled softly.
Emma was going to get into a lot of trouble.
