CHAPTER SEVEN | FEEL SO SOFT

The conversation with Liz left Bella reeling. Pinching her bottom lip between her thumb and pointer finger, Bella paced the length of her room. Unsure of how to proceed, Bella weighed her options — she could call Peter up or go to his apartment and try to fix things, or she could wait it out, let him cool down and see him at school in the morning.

"This is stupid," she muttered to herself.

Knowing she should just go to Peter's, she crossed the room and shoved her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. She could hear Alex down below, just getting home from his 24-hour shift, and figured she should probably let him know she was going out for a bit.

"Hey, Bells," Alex said with a bleary-eyed smile when she entered the kitchen. "How was school?"

"Not bad," Bella shrugged. She bit the inside of her cheek. "I'm gonna head to Peter's for a bit."

"Did you do your homework?" Alex asked, eyeing her carefully as he smeared mayonnaise onto a piece of bread for his sandwich.

"Yes," Bella said, rolling her eyes.

It was only half a lie. She did most of it. But she has a first-period study in the morning, so she wasn't sweating the thirty-five algebra problems she had to do ( especially since all the answers were in the back of the book ).

"Okay," Alex said. "Don't stay out too late and if you go out—"

"Be safe," Bella finished. She waved her hand nonchalantly as she pulled her phone out of her pocket to text Peter that she was coming over. "Yeah, yeah, I know."

It had been a while since she'd really gone out to beat up criminals. She didn't want to stop, but Ashara has firmly requested.

( "Please, just take it slow on the crime-fighting, Bella. Things are... rocky, and until I can negotiate the Accords down into something palatable..." )

Of course, Bella had handled some small matters, like corner store robberies that wouldn't pop up on any governmental radars, but she hadn't done anything crazy. There were no supervillain plots for her to stop.

"I'm sure you're tired, so I guess I'll see you in the morning," Bella said, leaning over the counter and hugging Alex lightly. "Bye."

There was a loud crack and Bella disappeared from time and space for a mere moment, allowing her universe to collapse in on itself, as she travelled from her apartment to Peter's. When Bella's feet slammed onto Peter's bedroom floor, not even a full second later, he jolted off his bed and tumbled to the ground.
