On the day of their last training session, Crocas and Claudia said good luck to them before they went down in the lifts. Crocas had gone over their skills and the tributes had a good idea of what to do for the Gamemakers. The training session for the morning for Haymitch and Maysilee meant going round to all the stations that they wanted to refresh. At noon, they were sent away to a room off the gymnasium and called in one by one. As each one was called up, Haymitch paid attention to the names for the first time. He wanted a distraction from his own private scoring so he made a list.

Once everyone from the other districts had been called forth, the tributes from District Twelve got called forth as well. First was Poppy. Clay squeezed her hand and whispered good luck to her before she left, trembling. Next was Maysilee. She walked forwards, her hands clenched and ready for her fate. Then it was Haymitch's turn. Haymitch inhaled deeply and walked into the gymnasium. He glanced at the Gamemakers. None of them was paying attention to him anymore. They would have lost interest a long time ago, instead, they were discussing the tributes from District One and Two. Clearly, they had impressed the Gamemakers. This annoyed Haymitch but he felt his skill would not be enough to interest them. He devised a quick plan. He had ten minutes to present his skill so he quickly got to work. He arranged eight dummies, all in different positions. Some hidden behind objects with only bits showing of their bodies, some were higher up than Haymitch, some were positioned further back. When all eight were set up, Haymitch went to a table where some knives of various choice were available. He picked up a set of ten, sharp blades. He tested the weight. Reasonably light but thrown with some force and he should make a good impact.

Haymitch threw his knives. He landed exactly on the mark each time. When he was done, he glanced at the Gamemakers. A few were watching him, reasonably impressed. The majority weren't interested.

Grabbing some paint from the camouflage station, Haymitch quickly scribbled on each dummy. He then dropped the paint to the floor. It fell with a clatter and the talk of the Gamemakers stopped. They all glanced at Haymitch's handiwork. He smiled wide at them and walked out, leaving them with eight career tributes all decorated to look (somewhat) like Jewel, Pearl, Jetson, Opulence, Cinder, Steella, Mason and Rebar.
