Dark blue waves lapped at the cliffs. From this distance, the rocks looked black as night. My eyes followed a figure being washed up on shore, even under the smoky sky her fiery hair shone a bright vermillion. I immediately raced down the slick steps, passing burgundy flowers that sang with the wind. By the time I felt the sand between my toes, the figure stirred. Then I felt time froze as I stared — stared at my friend's legs, now a glittering blood red tail. We gaped at each other, still with shock and horror.
Lira was a siren. A monster.
I saw her heaping gasps of air as if trying to breathe like a human again. The gills on her neck reflected wisps of light as I watched them open and close, open and close. I looked her in the eye. They always said sirens have multi-coloured pupils -- the more colourful they are, the more powerful. But as I looked at her, my breath hitched: in her eyes, hundreds of thousands of colours swirled together in an endless kaleidoscope, mixing in madness, joy, and chaos. They seemed to speak to me — of her fear and bewilderment. I saw beginnings and endings, mayhem and harmony, darkness and light.
I blanched and recoiled in chilled understanding: I shouldn't dread an oncoming storm. She was the storm.
