The next morning Nix woke up earlier than normal and looked down to make sure that the day before wasn't a dream. When she saw her small, feathery dragon curled up against her, Nix's heart just about melted.

When she nudged her awake, Clara turned to glare at her Rider, a very young female voice echoing in her mind. You didn't have to wake me up like that, you know.

Nix's eyes widened, and she stared at Clara uncomprehendingly. Finally she spoke in a small voice, "Was that you?"

The smartass dragon in front of her rolled those stunning blue eyes and sniped at Nix. No, it was a freaking disembodied voice in your head, of course it's me!

Nix huffed out a breath. "You don't have to be so sarcastic."

I'm just taking after my Rider.

"Oh shush, little bird, let us go take a shower and then head on to class."

Clara bobbed her head in agreement, stretching before flaring open her wings and gliding to the ground. Nix rolled her eyes and dropped down from her bed, going to the closet to wisely pick out her outfit before heading to the shower.

Again they both took showers and brushed their teeth, Nix changing and then drying Clara nicely.

When they finished, they just got out the door when Jay (he told them to call him that at dinner the night before) appeared out of thin air. Nix shrieked in surprise, startling Clara, who was on her shoulder and practically fell off when she jumped.

Ignoring Clara's dirty look, Nix rounded on Jay. "What the hell were you doing? You nearly scared the magic out of me!"

Jay raised an eyebrow mildly. "First of all, I simply hid in the shadows, like a Shade is allowed to do whenever they want. Second of all, I think it might be a little bit late to say that I scared the magic out of you." Then Jay pointed at something on the ground, and when Nix looked at it, her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

The ground under her had completely frosted over, the ice coated everywhere within a three foot radius except her feet.

Nix looked up at Jay, then down, then up again. Her mouth kept opening and closing like a fish, and Jay snorted in amusement. He nudged her softly on the arm, making Nix jump again and look at him with wide eyes. He chuckled. "Yes that was you. I remember when my powers first came up. I nearly jumped to the fourth moon and back. Now come on. Let's go to breakfast."

When Nix wasn't able to come up with a response, Jay chuckled again and gently grabbed her arm again and led her to the dining room, practically forcing her to pick out enough food for her and Clara to eat before leading them back to their table.

Nix had managed to regain her wits by the time they sat down, so she dug in while her mind rolled over this new ability of hers. It was certainly interesting, but she was afraid of using it before her classes later that day.

Breakfast was uneventful, her sister and friend sitting with the duo again. They joked and laughed, just having fun like normal teenage kids before having to go clean out their dishes and trays.

During breakfast they had managed to see which classes they had together. Turned out that because Jay was a year ahead, they didn't have any classes with him save for the meals and Flamma having Shade Control with him. Flamma and Leo had every class the same, save for their magic classes. Since Flamma was a Flame and Shade, she had Shade Control class and Flame Control class. Leo had Frost Control class with Nix but she was on her own for the other two.

Jay and the three friends had to part after breakfast, promising to meet up at lunch. Nix, Flamma, and Leo went on to History of Dragons.

Upon arriving, they realized that the teacher had given them assigned seats, every new name corresponding to every desk. And when Nix looked around to see if any familiar faces were in her class, she was disgusted to see Phantasma and Saeva along with that other girl talking to each other in the corner of the room.
