I wake up to the sound of hospital machines beeping and to a solid muscled chest behind me. My eyes shoot open as I remember that I fell asleep on Jax's lap last night. I quickly scramble off his lap and thank goodness he didn't have a tight grip on me. I straighten myself and I push back the little pieces of hair that flew in front of my eyes as I take a glance around the room.
Wren is still in a deep sleep, a peaceful and calm look on his face. I brush his hair back as I gaze down at him. He's suffered so much but now I will be there to protect him. My hand drops from his face and I turn to walk to the small washroom situated in the room. I turn on the lights and I'm not surprised with how I look.
My eyes are red, and deep bags are sitting under my eyes. I guess the stress from yesterday really got to me. I turn on the tap and splash cold water on my face a couple of times to wake myself up fully. I look at myself again in the mirror, hands gripping the sink watching the water roll down my face. I look down at my hands letting out a sigh.
"What else can I do for Wren? I feel like I haven't done enough," I mumble to myself. I shake my head and cut some paper towel to dry my face.
"I wouldn't say that," a low voice says from behind me. I look at the mirror seeing Jax leaning against the door with his arms crossed. His eyes meet mine reflected through the mirror.
It's a silent stare-off between the two of us. Jax is a mystery entirely on his own. He doesn't say anything as he looks at me.
"What do you mean?" I ask deciding to break the silence between us.
"I think you've done more than you could have," he says stepping towards me. He takes the paper towel that's hanging limply between my fingers and pats dries my face for me. "You were there for Wren when I couldn't be and I can't thank you enough for all you did," he mumbles lowly as his hand rests on my face.
I feel the temperature rising between us but, I remember that I don't know him properly, he's Wren's, my student's older brother and this is someone that also just got out of jail. What he did I still don't know. I let out a small cough and move around him.
"I'm going to check and see if Wren is awake." I practically bolt out of the small bathroom and back to Wren's bedside. Just as I sit down, I see Wren starting to wake up from his sleep.
"Good morning, Wren," I tell him and watch as he sleepily rubs his eyes before sitting up and stretching with a loud yawn. I let out a chuckle and my eyes soften at his actions.
"Good morning Ms. Dawson," he says in a sleepy voice.
"I thought I told you to call me Charlotte," I teased lightly.
"I forgot," he gasps, his eyes widening.
"You also didn't forget who came here last night?" I ask.
"Jax was here. Where is Jax Charlotte?" he asks in a fast voice.
"Calm down buddy, I didn't leave," Jax says as he steps out of the bathroom.
"Phew. I thought I was dreaming," Wren sighs wiping his forehead. Jax and I glance at each other before breaking out into chuckles. I check my phone and see it's only seven in the morning. I might as well go to the school, get my car, go home to change, and then come back here.
"Wren, I'm going to go home for a bit and change my clothes and grab a clean pair of clothes," I tell him. He turns to look at me, and I can tell he's not happy about what I just said.
"I pinky promise to come back." I hold up my pinky between us waiting to see if he would take it. He raises his pinky to mine and links it with mine. "I promise to be back Wren," I tell him. I get up from my seat nodding at Jax. He takes the now vacated chair and I wave goodbye to the two of them.
