Why couldn't I have superhuman healing? I dragged myself off my bed onto the stiff cold wooden floor, silently whimpering as the pain from last night's events set in. I moved one hand in front of me and began crawling to the door.
My sore legs lead me to the bathroom every step making me cringe. I peeled off the bloody gauze from my shoulder twisting my head to get a proper look at the scar. The once deep incision in my right shoulder blade was now a barely visible scar. I blinked multiple times but it remained the same jagged line reaching from my right shoulder blade toward my vertebrae. If I didn't know any better I would have presumed it to have just been a birth mark. Baffled I made my way to the shower and doused myself for ten minutes in hot water easing my muscles of pain.
After my shower I pulled on a pair of black jeans and a red long-sleeved hoodie with a maple leaf on it, yesterday's weather had been cool and judging by the droplets of rain collecting on my window, today would be no different. Walking down the stairs, the smell of French toast greeted my arrival to the kitchen, "Caitlin" I whined holding my breath. She turned to me a piece of toast in her hand "what I didn't make you any." I glared at the plate of French toast beside her, ever since my brother had stuck a worm in my French toast when I was seven I have hated the beloved breakfast meal. "Didn't you already have a bowl of cereal?" I asked picking up the box of honey nut cheerios on the counter top.
"What's your point?" She shoved the remaining piece of toast in her mouth and closed the book she was reading, "Writing for Dummies." I was about to ask why she was reading it when something strange caught my attention, "Where's my mom?"
"She went out to get some things; by the way she told me to remind you that a quarter bowl of cheerios was not breakfast." Her gaze turned to my barely filled bowl and tipped the box over filling my bowl almost to the brim with cereal.
"What happened yesterday?" She asked getting up to clean her plates.
"I got into an altercation with Greg and Sully."
She sighed, "What did you do this time?"
I swirled the little O's around, "I called them troglodytes then refused to tell them what it meant."
She laughed, "You bring this on yourself."
My eyes flicked up to her "you really think so?"
"Well why did you have to call them names?"
"Last I checked Cait they have been doing that for thirteen years." My voice was dripping with bitterness and anger.
"Hey calm down Riles I was just joking."
"Yeah well some jokes are expensive," I took a bite of my soggy oats clamping my teeth down hard on the spoon. She came behind me and placed her arms around me causing me to drop my spoon into the bowl splashing milk on the counter.
"I'm sorry Riles," She whispered in my ear giving me a feather kiss on the cheek rendering me unable to move. I inhaled deeply trying to slow down my heart rate.
"I am going to get ready for school," she said against my cheek with a sensual tone. I watched as she ran up the stairs longing for her to return to her previous position. "Oh by the way, I'm letting you drive today" she called from her room. I let out a whoop and started slurping down my cereal. I had gotten my license before she had but she had a mother who wasn't worried about her impending doom if she drove.
She came down fifteen minutes later a sullen look gracing her face her cell phone pressed tightly against her ear, she spoke softly but I still heard "yeah I know, yeah, okay. Bye, I love you."
"Hey who was that?" I asked taking the driver's seat crossing my seat belt over my chest.
"Oh just Jess" she pulled down her mirror and smacked her lips together.
