“Yeah mom, he’s just recuperating, I promise I will have your baby back in time for his exams, yeah…yeah I know he has to study but mom also keep in mind your son is a born genius. Exactly, I promise he will be returned in mint condition, not a hair out of place. Okay bye mom, love you.” I hopped down the last step of the rickety wooden staircase, “mom still freaking out about my whereabouts?”

Jason turned around to face me “yeah well when you son goes AWOL and runs away from home you do have a tendency to freak out.”

“Well technically you kidnapped me.”

“Yeah well technically I am saving your life so I would consider that a lesser of two evils.”

I took a seat beside him drumming my fingers gently on the counter “so apparently I’m some sort of genius now?” I glanced over at him; I never thought there would come a day when I would be comfortably sitting across my brother making jokes with him. It wasn’t like I had much of a choice seeing as he was my only choice of surviving. Or so he says. I still wasn’t sure if I even believed his story but I had no other choice. Everything he said seemed to fit together and make sense, why would he lie? If he were going to kill me he probably would have done it by now. We have spent a few weeks together in the middle of nowhere where he has had every chance to kill me but he hasn’t.

“You ready for practice?” He asked shifting his chair back.

I leapt from my chair “yep.”

I followed him out of the house bracing myself for practice. If I was going to have any chance of surviving against Caleb I needed to learn to fight and what better way to do it that through the person who beat me up everyday. I stepped out of the house and immediately coiled away wanting to retreat back inside. It may have been spring but it was still freezing out. The brightly shinning sun did nothing for the cold just severely blurred my vision. Jason threw a blow at me and I didn’t even notice to dodge. Apparently the vicious morning sun did nothing to faze him. I stumbled down to the ground landing face first into the grass. I inhaled the smell of dew staring at the blades of grass shooting out from the ground. A raging anger crept into me, my face growing warm. A new feeling I had developed over the past few days, spurts of energy that completely took over my mind and fueled my every move. I gripped the ground with my claws my eyes started to burn, rage tears filling my eyes. I leapt from the ground feeling my animalistic side kicking in revving up for a fight. I went at him without a second thought, planning my strategy as I fought.

I stepped back puffing out large amounts of air, “nice work, you could actually take on someone like me,” Caleb said peeling away from the tree I had pinned him it. I smiled “but not Caleb?” he shook his head “not in a million years.” I wisped the sweat off my face, “when do you think I am going to be ready?”

He chuckled shaking his head, “Riley that day will never come, nobody will ever be ready, the best thing you can do is to prepare.” He clasped my shoulder and headed for the cabin. I stood there stunned, tired and speechless. How were we supposed to prepare if we didn’t know when he was going to find us. I ran after him and asked him the words pouring out of my mouth. He opened the fridge and took out a bottle of water, “he already found us” he said non-chalantly. My heart began to beat faster and my vision began to darken. I grabbed the counter to steady myself, “what do you mean he found us?” he led the bottle over his head and drained it in less than 10 seconds, “Caleb isn’t new to this, he isn’t stupid either, he has literally every degree in this world he is just waiting for the right time to attack.”

“When would that be?”

“The full moon” my feet crumpled under me and I fell to the floor my body sprawling across the kitchen floor “that’s in two days,” I groaned. “I am going to die in two days.”  Jason stood over me “no you’re not, not if I have anything to say about it.”

“What’s the plan?” I asked pushing myself up right “not what, who,” as if on cue the front door opened and in stepped a six foot girl with luminous curly shoulder length hair and small but commanding brown eyes.

“Riley meet Stephanie.”

She smiled flipping her hair over her shoulders. It was thick and curly reaching past her shoulders, chestnut with blond highlights. Her lips were stretched out in a smile but her eyes failed to crinkle at the cornerrs or beam with light. They were cold and set on me, pitless black holes boring into my soul. I shifted on the floor feeling unheasy about her stare.

“RILEY” Stephanie screamed. I snapped my head up realizing that she had been calling my name for a while, “yeah what?” she rolled her eyes “do you want to live?” I nodded and hastily stood up ”what do I have to do?” she twisted her lips into a conniving smile, “how do I say this nicely, you have to sell your soul to the devil.”
