Esme rushed forward one we stepped out of the terminal engulfing me in a hug. "Oh thank God you're okay!" She exclaimed hugging me tighter.
"Of course she's okay! She probably gave those Italians hell!" Edward grinned.
"Oh Dmitri hates me. He tried to force feed me sandwich put I spit it out on his lap." I grinned. Edward laughed as he pictured it in his mind.
"Well we brought you food. We figured you'd be hungry." Rose said pushing a box into my hands. I opened the white lid hoping for Chinese or something but instead I found a small single serving chocolate cake. I looked up baffled at Emmett who winked at me grinning.
"Come. We have a long drive ahead of us." Carlisle smiled.
We walked out the Seattle airport with nothing but the cake in my hands resulting in strange looks from a few people passing by us. Emmett walked by me trying to tell me a joke that wasn't very funny at all; I smiled anyways at the punch line.
We split into two different cars: Carlisle, Esme, Rose and Edward in the Mercedes and in the Volvo Alice, Jasper, Emmett and I. I ate the cake in the back suddenly aware no other sounds could be heard in the car. Emmett pulled me onto his lap curling his arms around me.
"I missed you. I missed you so much." Emmett whispered into my ear.
"I can not tell you how crazy he was going waiting for the flight." Jasper muttered.
"Or on the plane. He almost broke down the door to the Voltori just to get to you. It didn't help Felix antagonized him further. What did he say again?" Alice asked amused.
"'The human of yours is very appealing. And challenging. I can tell why you have kept her alive so long.'" Emmett mocked angrily.
"Oh they all hate me. I refused to eat or drink anything they offered. I didn't talk to them at all. I basically pretended they weren't there most of the time." I laughed. "There was one that compared my enthusiasm to Marcus's."
"No wonder Dmitri was so happy when he walked us to the door." Emmett laughed. We pulled into the Cullen garage sometime around midnight, crickets could heard outside.
"How did they even find out about you?" Alice asked carefully.
"Tanya told them. They killed her because they thought she told them false information." I frowned. That was something I'll never forget. Her shrieks of pain as Felix and Dmitri ripped her apart burning her.
"Serves her right." Emmett hissed.
"You're just mad because you weren't the one to do it." Jasper accused. Emmett just smiled evily at his brother.
I took a shower wanting to rid myself of the Voltori stench that clung to my skin. Or maybe it was my own, who knows. But my hair was greasy and my body was dirty from the floor. I started to think about what Aro had said, what he called me. A shield. What was that? And why was it good? I couldn't possibly be a shield, I'm a girl not a metal war defence. I didn't understand any of it. I wondered what Alice had saw, what she showed Aro. And why it suddenly changed his mind about us leaving.?Join us or die. The said. Join the Voltori or join the vampire race? They want me to become on of them. That's why Emmett looked sad, he knew one way or another I would become like him. But why was that bad? Did I have to do some satanic ritual to be excepted into the vampire community or some kind of sacrifice. I really don't understand any of this at all.
"Oh good you're out of the shower. There are some people here that want to see you." Rose grumbled walking into her room. I scowled confused because who would want to see me?
I walked down the stairs curiously walking to the living room to find two boys sitting on the couch. They both looked similar in everything. But one boy I could tell was a few years older. They both had a tan completion, not entirely brown but a few shades lighter. Like they had spent all summer down in California. Their hair was dark brown cut short, with equally dark eyes to match. Muscles were bulging everywhere clearly visible from the shirts that clung to their bodies and the cut off denim shorts. Matching tattoos could be seen on their upper bicep, some kind of crest.
"Nichole!" The younger one perked up. He was the same boy from Charlie's kitchen.
"I remember you. You're the boy that was in Charlie's kitchen a month or two ago!" Charlie's name was like venom coming out of my mouth.
The boys face fell and didn't try to hide the disappointment. "You don't remember me do you?" He whispered.
"I'm sorry I haven't been out of his house since my mother died. I only went to school." I felt sorry for the boy who obviously knew me, or use to.
"I'll jump if you do." The boy whispered. I stared at him shocked. This boy, man that stoop in front of me was trying to tell me he was my childhood best friend. The boy that jumped out of a tree with me and had to get a cast when we broke our arms?
"Jake?" I whispered. He smiled rushing up to me engulfing me into a hug. I flinched slightly when he put his arms around me, a growl coming from the other side of the room. Jake let go when he realized I wasn't returning his hug.
He backed up back next to his friend that came with him. "Seven years. Seven years and you not once came to see me. And now you just show up? Where were you after my mom died? Where the hell did you disappear? I thought you knew what I was going through you ass! And you just abandoned me! You left me with him! Left me in hell! And now you come back!" My voice rose with anger.
"I tried! Charlie didn't want to see anyone for the first year! I called but he said that you didn't want to talk to me!"Jacob pleaded. I saw down next to Emmett on the other end of the L shaped couch.
"And you never tried again." It wasn't a question, it was more of a statement. Whispered with sadness and betrayal Nichole fought of the unwelcome tears. Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't feel. Crying shows weakness. Don't be weak. Nichole couldn't help the old mantra she would recite in her mind from when she lived with Charlie.
"No." Jacob whispered ashamed.
"I am Sam. Alpha of the pack." The older boy introduced trying to break the tension in the room.
"Do you like green eggs and ham Sam I am?" Nichole grinning mischievously.
"No." Sam deadpanned. I pouted in defeat
"The last time someone asked him that they got thrown off a cliff and into the ocean." Jake cackled.
"What is this pack everyone has spoken of lately?" I asked puzzled.
"There is a pack of werewolves that live on the La Push reservation." Sam explained. "Our ancestors have lived on those lands for thousands of years."
"Do you have control when you want to turn into a wolf or....?" I asked. I shouldn't be surprised, if vampires are real it was silly of me to think the other myths weren't.
"We shift when we want or when we get really mad." Jacob shrugged. Suddenly Jacob and Sam leapt off the couch and out the door with out a word. Talking about someone named Seth, they ran through the yard and into the woods. I faint tearing sound rang through the open door.
"Ugh. It stinks down here. They smell terrible!" Rose walked around opening windows. "Absolutely disgusting!" She wrinkled her nose.
"Like Emmett's socks?" Jasper asked walking in the den.
"No, like your death breath." Emmett hissed.
"No, like your-" Jasper started.
"-Boys boys. You're both pretty. Can I go eat now?" I asked sarcastically rising to my feet.
