Flasback 13: Useful Items

Nanda Parbat

Percy looked disbelieving at Blackjack, "Come again, please."
"There's something on my back, that I don't see and am uncomfortable with, boss."
"Yeah, that narrows it down, Blackjack, let me see."
He turned to Blackjack's back and let his hands carefully grope their way from Blackjack's neck over his back. He worked slowly and the tension was thick enough to cut it. Blackjack, who had closed his eyes, absolutely loathed saddles (he was a free spirit and Percy could ride without a saddle, if he wanted him to play taxi, thank you very much), so Percy was extra careful when he reached the place where a saddle would normally be. So when he touched something that was not fur, he was not overly surprised. What surprised him were the items he found after a bit of searching and feeling for the bags in them. The first item he took out, was an exact copy of the stygian ice whistle for Mrs O'Leary Daedalus had given him when he was fourteen. He looked shortly at it and decided to add it to his necklace soon. As he grabbed the second, he hissed, when he felt the blade cutting him, so as he took his hand and the bronze knife out of the bag, he had a golden liquid smeared across his hand. But he paid it no mind as he recognized which knife it was. The one Luke had gifted to Annabeth and in turn took his life, the one Annabeth had lost in Tartarus, where he, Percy, found it again and christened it Arai, because blades with history had a name, and arai was o so fitting: A cursed blade, that had been missed, when they had fought the inceration of curses. He was startled from his musing by a cough and raised his shortly before glazed over eyes to meet those of Ra's and the priestess, who looked questioning at his hand.
"I'll explain later", Percy told them and wiped his hand clean on the inside of his shirt after he had placed the knife on the floor.
*Come on, boss, hurry up. I want out of this thing*, Blackjack piped up.
"Of course, Blackjack", Percy told him, while he walked around the black pegasus. He stopped at the other side, found the saddlebag again and gripped the thing inside. And what came out was a sleek, grey laptop with a blue delta. Daedalus' Laptop that should have been in the storage he hid it in, before his last mission. Despite his curiosity, he laid it aside for a later inspection. First, he was getting those saddlebags off of Blackjack. Because he could not see anything, it looked rather clumsy as he loosened the saddle girth.
And as soon as he did not feel the pressure anymore, Blackjack reared up, so the bag slid to the floor. On impact with the floor it changed into an item Percy knew from a long time ago. It was an obviously improved chameleon armour one similar to the one Charles Beckendorf had forged in, what seemed now, a lifetime ago.
Percy gathered the items under the scrutinizing looks if Ra's, the Priestess and Blackjack and took them in: the Bronze Dagger Arai, one Chameleon Armour, Daedalus' Laptop and a Stygian Iron Whistle, to him this looked like a war preparation for attack, defence, intelligence and back-up. But instead of voicing his thoughts he picked everything up and asked, "is there a room where I can store these things?"
"Of course, there is", Ra's stated and proceeded to describe him the way.
Percy thanked him, then carried everything out. Blackjack followed him so they could talk more privately.

2 Flashback 14: Matter of Names

The steps of the black pegasus and his friend became quieter and quieter until they were in complete silence. But this silence between Ra's and the priestess did not hold long.
"Did you come to the same conclusion as me?", Ra's asked the priestess, a mysterious smile on his lips.
She nodded, "his name was the last puzzle piece. When I heard it I knew that he is the right one. I already knew he was special when I found him but after he revived you and survived your sword unhurt. Hearing his name only confirmed the suspicions I had", the priestess confirmed.
Ra's chuckled lightly, "It is a little bit ironic, don't you think? To find him appeared here of all places. A man who was named after the constellation Perseus, which translates into Arabic as Algol. A translation that derives from its likely most known star system Beta Persei or Algol. A shortening of Ra's al Ghul. Now, is this all a sequence of coincidences or is it fate?"
"Would it matter?", the priestess answered his question with a counterquestion, " You are death and a ghost, Al Sah-him first left the league to Al Sa-her and then forced him to give it to Nyssa. And Nyssa disbanded it. Perseus is here, already a very proficient fighter, who hasn't reached his full potential. However, you could be right. It could be fate. When I felt his arrival, it was something I never sensed before. And he still has that aura around him. One of strength and power as well as something light, joyous but also something deep, dark, maybe even sinister."
Ra's Al Ghul's ghost stood tall and gazed into her eyes, "So he has what he would need for the position. Let's just hope he takes it."

3 Flashback 15: Catching Up

As Percy and Blackjack were walking into the direction Ra's had given Percy, said person had his work cut out to hold the items in his hands, without them falling to the floor. And after a short silence, Blackjack asked his long lost friend, *So, Boss, what did you do the last years and more important how comes you are alive?*
"Well, Blackjack", Percy said as they reached the room Ra's had directed him to, "let me just put those things away, and then I will tell you."
He opened the door and lied the items on the bed before joining Blackjack on his way out of the monastery like building.
"You know, what happened to me after the camp was attacked?", Percy asked rhetorically, "Not everything was as it seemed, so instead of giving me an express ticket to my lovely uncle down under, I got in the even lower basement. I found a way out and started working for a secret organisation. I was killed again, found myself again on the second lowest level and was thrown in the lowest level that somehow led me here."
*That's one hell of a story there, Boss*, Blackjack thought aloud.
"Yeah, and that was just the ultra-short version of it."
*Then tell me the long version, while I stretch my wings. Come, hop on*
Percy climbed on the back of the black pegasus, who launched himself into the air. Percy relished the feeling of flying with his friend after so many years. And as they soared through the sky, Percy started to tell Blackjack his story.

AN: Thank you all for your support, this story is already more successful than I ever dared to hope. I hope you don't take offence in my update time, but this time my reason was another story. It's called "While Kidnapping Percy Jackson ..." and is a PJO and Harry Potter crossover. Maybe it helps you to bypass the wait for another update.
Thanks again
