"Bye, Mom!"
Noah Hart waves to his mother as she pulls away in her silver Corolla from the turnaround headed for work. Looking down at his chest, he finds the gold letters "WBA" emblazoned on the left breast of his blue oxford shirt. The garment feels a little snug and stuffy on his body. Looking down at his belly, he finds his toes hidden deep within brown leather shoes that perfectly match his khaki trousers.
God, what am I wearing?
As the boy looks across the campus courtyard, he finds some solace in that the students have to wear the same uniform though he notes that most of them "look good" dressed up in blue and brown. Noah begins to envy the sense of purpose and confidence with which the students exude walking across campus. Though he just started today, Noah knows most of these teens have been in the Willie Blount Academy system for most of their childhood. They know the school and the people in it. He remembers an expression his father likes to say.
"They know who they are and what they're about."
The boy sighs and runs a hand through his red hair as he makes his way down a paved walkway where some students appear to be gathering. As he gets closer to the door, boys and girls turn and greet him.
"Hi!"
"Hello!"
"First day? Nice to meet you!"
A collection of faces and names floods his senses and before he knows it, Noah finds himself sitting at a table in a cafeteria filled with children. Though he knows no one here, teachers instruct him that he is to stay in the back of the room with the "Freshmen!" Presumably before them sits the upperclassmen with seniors farthest from him and nearest a stage.
The chatter dies down as several male staff in dress suits takes seats on each side of a podium. With a tap on the microphone, an elderly man in round glasses and gray jacket and tie gets the attention of the whole body at once.
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I'm Principal McNamara. For those of you coming to Willie Blount Academy for the first time, we welcome you! For those coming back, we're glad to have you with us once more..."
Noah struggles to pay attention during the speech. Restless he can't help but notice his bouncing leg fearing he smells of sweat. Looking to his left, he spots a boy with dark, curly hair pretending to snore and nap on his hands. Noah smirks getting the boy to smile back and give him a thumbs up.
When the introductions are over, McNamara starts dismissing the students from seniors downward prompting the students to return to talking. The curly haired boy and a tall, large boy with short brown hair make their way towards Noah.
"Hi, my name's Huxley. Are you new?"
"Yeah, my name's Noah. Nice to meet you. And you?"
"Hi, my name's Cameron, but everyone calls me by my last name, Blaise. Don't know why though."
"Blaise? Nice, to meet you, too!"
The boys shake hands and start talking on the way to their first class, Freshman English. Though he is initially excited to have someone approach him, Noah quickly gets an unpleasant vibe from his new acquaintances as they continue to talk to each other.
"Man! Remember Schwartz from Nashville, Blaise?"
"Yeah, that guy was stupid! I told him not go in there, but he did anyway."
"Oh, dude, that girl was like smoking hot! He had to-even if she was a-"
"Dude, she was like literally unconscious. I don't know about you but- "
