━━• chapter four; The Right Partner •━━

Steve, Bucky, and I have known each other for years now. Our team test run was a success, but they want to keep me hidden for a surprise. We walk through the trenches explosions happening from everywhere. The soldiers there are all happy to see us there.
"It's Captain America!" One shouts to another. A woman grabs my coat and pulls me toward her. Her face with dried tears as she holds her baby.
"The Germans took everything --" She explains to me in her native language. "homes, food... the ones who couldn't escape... they took as slaves."
"Where did this happen?" The mother points beyond the trench.
"Veld."
"We need to help these people." Steve looks across the battlefield and shakes his head.
"We need to stay on mission." He reasons.
"And there's no safe crossing for at least a day ahead." Bucky tries to explain.
"But these people are dying, they've nothing to eat. And in the village... Enslaved, she said." I reason. "Women. Children."
"There's nothing we can do about that."
"How can you say that? What is the matter with you?"
"This is no man's land, Diana." Steve says, "This battalion has been here for nearly a year, and they've barely gained an inch because on the other side are Germany's deadliest soldiers. Pointing machine guns at every square inch of this place. This is not something you can cross. It's not possible."
"So we do nothing?"
"We are doing something. We can't save every person in this war. Besides, it's not what we came here to do." I stepped away from the two men clearly frustrated before changing into my armor and placing my tiara on my head.
"No, but it's what I'm going to do." I walk up from the trench. I hear them shout from down below, but I keep moving forward. Shots are fired from the other side, and I deflect the bullets with my gauntlets. I keep walking and pace slowly picking up as I continue to block the shots. An explosion is heard as I see a big shell flying toward me. I take out my shield and knock the round aside as it exploded at contact with the ground. A mass of bullets operate their way towards me as I put my shield in front of me as I move forward, but I'm slowed down too much that I drop to one knee. I turn and see Steve at my side and look and see Bucky at the other. Bucky flings as grenade into the trench taking out one of the nests. I push myself into the air and land in the second nest, taking down any soldier and destroying the second machine gun. I glance and see the village.
"Steve!" I shout over the commotion. "Let's go!" I take off to the village. As we reach the entrance, we get fired on. I look at Steve and Bucky. "Stay here I'll go ahead." I race towards the gunfire. My sword at her side, shield on my back -- run, avoiding fire and grenades. I jump onto the wall of a building, springing off it, smashing through a window of another building landing in the middle of a group of armed German soldiers. I kick a table crashing it into two soldiers! I deflect bullets with my bracelets, turning to the other soldiers sending them flying with my fists, my shield. I hit a soldier, and he flies through a window. I continue to fight my way through the building, breaking through a door -- taking on more German soldiers inside. I rushed the last one, colliding into him -- using him as a shield as I crashed out of a large glass window and landed on a nearby rooftop. Entering the town, I see a tank pinning down some of the townsfolk. I knock into it as I flip it over. I block the shots that are fired at me and turned to see two enemies fall. Bucky and Steve flank me, and we all work side-by-side until all the soldier by us are down. Bang! A shot rings out through the square I look up and see a sniper.
"Bucky!" Steve shots. "Belltower!" I lead the villagers inside the building until all is silent after a final shot.

I sit next to Steve and Bucky, a little girl comes up and hands me a flower. I accept the gift with a smile and thank her.
"You did this," Steve says. I turn to look at him.
"No, we did." Then I glance over at Bucky. "I can't believe I've already been in man's world for a couple of years now." I rest my head on Steve's shoulder, he tenses a few seconds before relaxing. I place the flower in my hair as soft music begins to play in the background.
"I'm going to assemble the rest of the team for the train tomorrow," Bucky says before patting my knee and leaving us. Steve moves out from under me and holds out a hand.
"What are you doing?" I smile.
"Asking you to dance." He says sheepishly. My smile broadens into a grin.
"What about waiting for the right partner?"
"I believe I have the right one in front of me." My hand slides into his as he pulls me close to him. I am aware of how close we actually are.
"You're awfully close." Neither one of us moves to pull away.
"I guess that's the point." I move closer to Steve as snow falls from the sky.
"I will never get over how magical a snowfall is."
"Your right." I rest my head back on his shoulder.
"Is this what people do when there are no wars to fight?"
"This and other things."
"What things?"
"I don't know. They... make breakfast."
"What else?"
"Read the newspaper. Go to work -- They... get married. Maybe have babies, grow old together."
"What is it like?"
"No idea." I pull back slightly and look at him, and for the first time being here, I think I would actually like to find out.
"Maybe... once I defeat Ares and war ends forever... there will be time to learn about... all kinds of things." The intensity in Steve's gaze makes me take a deep breath.
"God, I hope your right." Steve pulls away suddenly and clears his throat. "We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow, goodnight." He kisses my cheek before walking away.

I walk through the rubble of the fallen tavern and find Steve sitting by himself.
"Doctor Erskine told me the serum, wouldn't just work on my muscles and my reflexes," He says hearing my footsteps. "- he said it would work in my cells, create a protective system of healing, of regenerating. Which means..." He turns to her, somber but clear-eyed... "I can't get drunk."
"I'm sorry, Steve." I start carefully. "I cared for him too, but what happened wasn't your fault."
"Did you read the reports?"
"No, but Peggy told me little things. Steve, it's not your fault. I could have done more, this is on me."
"I'm going after Johann Schmidt. I'm going to burn out every hole there is for him to hide in. And I'm not going to stop until he and all of Hydra are captured or dead."
"Steve, we shouldn't kill them. They have no idea what they are doing because they are under the corruption of Ares."
"They killed my best friend."
"So you would just murder them?" He doesn't say anything for a beat.
"I didn't want to kill anyone, but I don't like bullies, but I don't see a way now to avoid it."
"So everything you ever told me was a lie." I can hear the hurt fill my voice. Steve turns to look at me. "I see the truth now. Isn't just the Germans that Ares has corrupted it's you too. It's all of you. I will find Ares, and I will stop him." I start to stop away, but Steve's hand catches my arm.
"You can't not by yourself." I look Steve in his blue orbs that I've come to genuinely care for.
"What I do is not up to you." I push him away from me and walk away.
