I greet people walking to The Louvre on this bright and early Thursday morning. I make a left upon entering the building towards my office. I stop at the mysterious figure sitting in my chair.
"Who are you?" I ask in French setting my briefcase down at my desk.
"An ally." He replies in English.
"Ally?" He sets down a beige folder on top of my case. He motions for me to take it. I pick it up and slowly open it. My face falls at the first picture there.
"You are an interesting woman, Diana."
"Where did you get this?" I look up from the file that has everything on when I first arrived into man's world, to the liberation of the city Veld, living with Peggy Carter for a short while, having some part in creating SHIELD, the assassination attempt on me, etc.
"I have my resources."
"No one could possibly have this information me. Unless she kept the file." I scoff. "You're SHIELD."
"I know you've been looking for that specific photograph. I was hoping in bringing you back Captain Rogers you would come out of retirement."
"You brought back a piece of him that I have been hunting for nearly 50 years, and for that I am grateful, but I don't think that just because you are SHIELD and did this for me, I'll let you bully me into doing your dirty work. Now, please leave my office." I trail off because he never said his name.
"Director Nick Fury," He corrects me. I contemplate for a moment on where his name sounds familiar. "You see, I think I can convince you to do my "dirty" work." He tosses another folder on the desk that reads Avengers Initiative. "I hoped to bring together Earth's mightiest heroes. You are one of the greatest heroes that this world has ever known."
"Me the greatest hero? No, that was Captain Rogers. Me, I'm just a soldier."
"From my understanding, you weren't just a soldier but a leader."
"Where did you hear this?" Nick places the phone on top of the folders.
"I'm recording this if that's okay with you."
A clear projection of Nick's voice plays through. Silence follows.
"You find yourself in a new world, one where your friends are long dead."
Silence again.
"You know, the only way to make this easier on yourself is to talk about it."
"I've apparently been asleep for seventy years, and I miss my date with her."
The voice that speaks next makes me freeze in place.
