"How long before they find us?" Calum asks when they're back at the fox hole. Rhett shrugs.
"Hard to say. That bomb may have stalled them, but it didn't kill them. We would have heard a cannon." The others frowned. Sadly, the careers must not have been close enough. "We need to find some better coverage," Rhett sighed, jumping in. "I don't know if we'll all fit." Karalyn hops down into the fox hole with Rhett. They had been making it bigger, but now that they had a fifth person and five people's supplies, it was going to get cramped.
"We can have one person on watch outside. I can take first shift, you guys rest up," Luke offers. Rhett helps Kendahl into the ditch, Calum jumping in after her.
"You sure you don't want to sleep?" Karalyn asks.
"I'm alright," he smiles. "Thanks, though." Karalyn reentered the fox hole with the others as Luke covered up the entrance with leaves and sticks. Inside, the other four were sitting together in little light.
"We won't be able to see a thing when it gets later." Calum sighed.
"What do you need to be seeing?" Karalyn asked. He shrugged. It wasn't too cramped that they couldn't breath down there, but they were pretty snug. It was cozy, but if they added another person it would become uncomfortable.
"I almost forgot!" Kendahl announced. "I have matches! I got them from the Cornucopia. So, if we do need to see anything, we could always use these. Sparingly, of course." The others smiled.
"Great job," Rhett applauded.
"See, now we'll be able to see," Karalyn smirked. Calum rolled his eyes. As it got later, the Capital anthem echoed through the sky and the faces of those who have passed appear in the night sky. District Three has gone, half of Eight, District Nine, and half of Ten, Eleven, and Twelve. Only eight tributes have died, and more than half remain. However, a few may be injured, for all they knew. After a while, after getting some rest, Karalyn snuck out of the fox hole to join Luke. A few hours had gone by. He turned when he saw her, smiling.
"Hey," he greeted. "Here to tell me my shift is over?" he teased somewhat. Karalyn laughed.
"Yes, actually," she replied. "But I came to talk, mostly." She joined him on the log that he was sitting on. After a moment of silence, she turned to him, frowning. "They're coming for us, aren't they?" Luke sighed.
"I wouldn't doubt it. Now that they know what direction we ran in, they'll be tracking us. I'm not sure they know how many of us there are, though."
"Let's hope they think it's just Kendahl. That way, we can have some surprise on them. The Capital is going to get involved in these games somehow if we don't shed some blood soon," she reminded him. Not that he needed reminding; that was on everyone's mind.
"Yeah... But I think we can take them." Karalyn looked up, shocked.
"You do?" He nods.
"Yeah. You've got some skills with that dagger. Rhett has those bombs, Kendahl can outrun them, and I'm sure we can snap a few necks if needed. We're a pretty good team." The girl smiled.
"Well, I admire your confidence in us." That gave her an idea. "Wait... I think I know how to get the careers! I think we can make something that will blow them sky high. But it will take time, and that's something we don't have right now. If they attack tomorrow, we need to get out of there as fast as we can, and buy us time. Then we can focus on making this bomb, and we may finally have a chance." Luke was all for it.
"So what do you need me to do?" he asked.
"Cover me. Tomorrow, when the careers come after us, I need you to be by my side. I'll watch your back, you watch mine. Rhett may have created the bombs, but I know how they work too. I can do this. If we survive, we'll be one step ahead of the careers." Luke smirks, shaking her hand.
