It's been two weeks since I received the news of Nick's betrayal.
Two weeks of relentless training, of blood and sweat staining the ground until their scent became as familiar as the air itself. In one week, we attack. And when we do, there will be nothing left of them but shattered bones and fading echoes.
The pack officially acknowledged me as their Luna last week. The second time I saw them since the wedding. I haven't kept in contact much—it didn't matter before, and it doesn't matter now. We are at war.
I don't know why Nick left. I don't care either. He made his choice, and I will make mine. Our powers were meant to be equals, but years of training must have tipped the scales in someone's favor. Now, we'll find out who.
I exhale slowly, forcing the tension out of my shoulders. Unfortunately, Axe decided to keep the servants around, claiming we need them now more than ever. "We'll let them go after the war," he had said, "right now, we need them to cook and clean, because no one has time to make their own damn bed."
I roll my eyes at the memory, chewing absently on a piece of chicken breast when, out of nowhere, my stomach turns violently.
The nausea comes fast and brutal. I barely make it to the sink before I'm throwing up. My body, overworked and exhausted, having yet another weak moment. Again.
Wiping my mouth, I rinse the sink and force myself to sit back down. I take a smaller bite, but the acrid taste of vomit lingers, making my stomach twist all over again.
Gem walks in then, dropping into the seat beside me with a dramatic groan, her forehead hitting the table.
"If I hear one more word about working out, I swear, I'm turning the gym into a graveyard."
I chuckle. "Someone's been having a really good time training."
"NO." She cuts me off before I can finish. "Not the cursed word, please. Kaiden sent me here to grab food before going back, but if I have to lift one more weight, I'm stabbing someone."
I smirk, leaning in closer. "Oh? So all you two have been doing in the gym is... working out? That explains the sounds I heard last night. Must've been the weights, right? Just too heavy, yeah?"
Her head jerks up, her eyes nearly popping out of her head. "Oh my god. Did everyone hear us?"
I tilt my head dramatically, taking a slow sip of water. "Hmm... why do you think the gym's been deserted lately? Everyone's suddenly into training by the forest. Isn't that strange? But don't worry, we'll just have to give the gym a nice deep clean... just in case there's some... residual energy lingering around."
"OKAY, OKAY, WE GET IT, SHUT UP MAY." She slaps her hand over my mouth, her face a shade of red "I am never showing my face in public again. Ever."
I grin into her palm. "At least wait until after the war. You know, we don't want to make an impact before then."
She glares at me through her fingers.
