It felt as though time had unraveled itself, stretching, distorting, making the very air around me thick and heavy, as if I could barely breathe. Everything had become a haze of uncertainty—what was right, what was wrong, what was real? The world tilted, and my stomach turned, a cold emptiness hollowing me out. It wasn't fear alone, not just shock. It was something deeper, a strange knot of dread in my gut, like part of me had just died and the air itself had abandoned my lungs.
I could feel Axe's shock, the quiet horror coursing through his body. But how could I blame him? This wasn't something we encountered every day. I could still taste the remnants of food from earlier, now soured and heavy in my stomach, threatening to rise as I tried to hold it down.
Axe broke the silence first, his voice trembling with disbelief. "Your eyes..."
That simple statement snapped us all back to reality.
Nick seemed to emerge from whatever stupor he had been in, muttering to himself as he rubbed his eyes. "Shit, I melted my contacts."
The words made no sense at first, but the intensity of his gaze, now silver instead of the usual icy blue, told a different story. Contacts? Silver eyes? And enough power to push an Alpha to the ground?
I reached out, trying to sense the emotions that lay behind those strange eyes of his, but there was nothing. A thick wall, an impenetrable barrier. How was that possible? I was supposed to be able to sense emotions. I could feel the tremor in my voice as I asked, "Your eyes... how are they... how are they silver? "
Nick's face paled, and he simply shrugged, brushing it off. "That's a very good question."
And just like that, an oppressive silence filled the room. No answers, just a weighty stillness that seemed to drag on forever. Axe, always the Alpha, stood tall, his voice booming in command. "Explain what we just saw. NOW."
But the force of his usual authority was met with a quiet defiance. Nick stood, untouchable, his presence alone radiating a raw power that eclipsed even Axe's, how did we not notice this before... unless he was keeping it hidden. It was as if the room itself bowed to him, a silent acknowledgment of his superior strength.
Nick met Axe's challenge with a steady gaze, unshaken. "I think it's about time I explain who I am to you, Skye."
Axe and I exchanged a look, both of us caught in the whirlwind of uncertainty. Could we trust him? Could we trust anything he said? My heart pounded in my chest as I gave him the silent go-ahead, though my mind was filled with doubt.
Nick seemed to sense my hesitation. He took a deep breath, as if steeling himself for the words that were about to come, and then—almost imperceptibly—lowered the shield around his emotions. If he lied now, I would know.
"I'll tell you," he began, his voice quieter now, tinged with the weight of years—no, centuries—of secrets. "But not here. Let's go to the Alpha's office. It's soundproof. This isn't something anyone else can hear."
We followed him, the hallway echoing with our footsteps as we entered the office and locked the door behind us. Nick began to pace, agitation rolling off him in waves. He muttered to himself about how I wasn't ready, how I needed to regain my memories before hearing this. But Axe—his patience finally running out—shushed him, his tone commanding.
"Just tell her, Nick. We've waited long enough."
Nick paused, his eyes darkening with the weight of his words, and finally began.
"Okay, in order to understand this, you need to hear the Legend of Burning Silver." He ran a hand through his hair, a shadow of reluctance passing over his face. "Just listen."
