"I'm coming back to you, Y/N, please don't worry about me," Cato whispers, holding you tightly with his strong arms as you cry into his shoulder. You were in the Justice Building, visiting your boyfriend before he leaves for the Capitol; tragically, he was reaped for the Games on your 6 month anniversary."Promise me," you peer up into his ocean eyes, taking in every last second before your time is up. He presses a soft kiss to your forehead and strokes your hair: one of his favourite things about you.
"I promise. I love you," this time, he connects his lips with yours. It wasn't a hungry kind of kiss: it was one full of passion, one that drove you crazy. If only you could stay in this moment, and keep it this way forever.
The peacekeepers burst through the door and usher you out of the room, leaving you screaming for Cato, eyes pooling with worrisome tears as you tried to reach out to him, to feel him there one last time.
Thinking back to this moment makes you realise how much Cato has changed in the arena. Of course, he was still the same brave, determined boy you fell in love with, but he had acquired a certain insanity that drove you crazy yourself; it pained you to see him so vulnerable. To everyone else, he was a ruthless killing machine, murdering for the bragging rights. But to you, he was a boy doing whatever it took to see his love again.
Your eyes had been glued to the screen for the past five days, watching and waiting for that final moment where Cato was crowned Victor and could return home safely to you. There were no such moments in which you doubted his abilities, for you knew wholeheartedly that he could take on anybody he wanted to.
The Gamemakers were obviously getting bored - a new pack of muttations had emerged from the tree line in search of their first victim. One unfortunate tribute from District 11 happened to be in their path. A single scream was all that could be heard throughout the near-empty arena.
You were one step closer to getting Cato back, no matter how bad you felt for the other tributes. It was just him and the two from 12. The girl, Katniss, had somehow out scored all of the other tributes, attaining the first score above 10 ever, but you weren't worried about her nor the other boy.
Bursting from the forest, all three remaining ran to the cornucopia, their lives depending on it. By the time Katniss and the boy made it up, Cato already had his sword drawn. This was the final battle before he was coming home to you; the thought of it alone brought tears to your eyes.
The boy, Peeta, was kept in a headlock by Cato, who held his sword in his free hand. But everything happened in slow motion, as Katniss let an arrow fly straight into the hand of your lover. Peeta turned and kicked him off the edge, leaving him to be torn to shreds by the mutts.
"No!" you shrieked in desperation, "this isn't real."
But as much as you didn't want to believe it, you knew it was the truth and you had to face it. Sounds of despair echoed throughout the district as you hurled anything and everything at the screen, walls and windows. Sobs wracked your body as your fingers clawed your hair, tugging until your head was numb. You laid on the floor, nearly motionless now, as the feeling of utter hatred to the Capitol surged through your veins. Your eyes were dried out, but you felt an ache in your heart that could never be erased.
"But you promised."
I hope you enjoyed this one, it was quite sad. Once you get attached to a character it's hard to write a death scene for them lol
