Chapter Ten

After we visited a local shelter to get patched up, we patched a call in to Carmen.
"Hello? Oh my God, it's them!" Carmen's voice was relieved, and I heard a small echo. "You're on speaker phone. Oh God... What happened to you two?" Jesse turned on speaker phone as well.
"Simon came back. Apparently no-one thought to mention that silver bullets can't kill Vampires." The line was silent.
"Well, I mean wouldn't you have thought-" Jesse cut the voice off.
"Now isn't the time, Hanji. We're in Santa Fe. God knows how we got here. Simon blacked us out at the ramen shop.
"We heard there was a shooting. We had hoped you had escaped." I spoke now.
"Simon was smarter than we gave him credit for. Look, when do you guys think you can get to the West Coast?" There was murmuring.
"Well, after very brief discussion, Hanji and Genzo will come to get you. They'll take a plane that departs immediately. I said, Go!" We heard scampering as the two left for the airport. "If we're lucky, it should be a matter of hours. Just get some food in you. I'll have Gabie call a local restaurant and pay for your tab." Jesse and Gabriel talked back and forth for a little while, hanging up after a few more minutes.
"Alright. So, Hanji and Genzo'll be here in about 19 hours, then we'll head on a plane right back to Kyoto. So thank God we won't have to hitchhike to California. Come on. We'll eat, then we can sleep in a hotel. The La Fonda is pretty nice. Haven't been there in decades." We walked to the restaurant, eating hastily, retreating into the hotel as soon as the sun started to set.
"I still can't believe that we have the money to sleep in such nice hotels." I threw myself onto the bed. "So soft!" I laughed as Jesse jumped onto the bed with me.
"They up-ed the quality!" He buried his face into the pillow. "Yessss... Okay! Goodnight!" He started to snore, stereotypical of inconspicuousness.
"It is getting late. It's like..." I looked at my watch. "Nine o'clock." Jesse laughed.
"Wrong timezone. It's seven. We're gonna need to get you a watch that actually syncs to time zones." He laughed and I hit him with a pillow.
"I hate you." He only laughed again.
"Love you too, Darl."
"Wait what."
"Nothing!" And with that, he buried himself in the pillow. I smiled softly. I kissed his cheek, slipping my body under the covers. I turned out the overhead lamp, and pushed myself into a deep slumber.
I awoke slowly. The sun shone through the window, onto my face. I heard water running. Jesse must've been in the shower. I groggily got out of bed. It was already twelve. Wait, no. Ten. Different time zone. The water shut off, and out came Jesse, a towel draped around his waist.
"'Mornin', beautiful." He leaned down, kissing my cheek. He smiled, running a hand through my hair. "You are beautiful, you know that, right?" I smiled.
"I believe every word you say." He snickered. "What's so funny?"
"Well, my darling... I must confess. I AM A LUCHADOR!" He jumped on the bed. "OLE!" He jumped off, swiftly taking me into his arms, spinning around with me.
"Jesse! You psycho! Put me down!" He stopped spinning and smoothly kissed my lips.
"I am only a psychopath in love, my dear! And for you, I am the most infamous asylum in the universe." I laughed.
"Okay, conquistador. I love you too." I smiled, and his act dropped. Red spread across his cheeks.
"You do?" He nearly fumbled over his words. "I've been meaning to tell you..." His grin was dope filled. He looked truly starstruck.
"Where's the flirtatious, macho Jesse Stevens gone?" I kissed his cheek softly.
"He's run off with Tania Pyne. He fell head over heels for her." He embraced me, like if he let me go, I'd disappear. I held onto him tightly, my heart racing at his touch. He checked his watch. "5 more hours until the boys get here. What do you wanna do?" I shrugged.
"Vegas?" He smiled.
"I'll call a driver!"
"I'll get some cash from Gabe!"

"We got this! C'mon, c'mon... WOO! Triple sevens across the board!" We high-fived. "Jackpot, baby!" We both embraced, watching the coins fall into the collector.
"You're a blessed man, Jesse." We cashed in our prize, giving us a total of 250,000 dollars. Jesse's phone began to ring. "I'll get it for you." I said, taking his phone out of his pocket, letting him holster the money in a Vegas briefcase. "Y-ello?"
"Is this Miss Tania?"
"Yes. Who am I speaking to?"
"IT'S HANJI YOU DUMMY WE'RE HERE!" I gulped. "WHERE ARE YOU?" I chuckled.
"Vegas-"
"SERIOUSLY OH MY GOD GENZO THEY'RE IN VEGAS!" It couldn't tell if Hanji's tone was that of excitement or anger. "THAT'S LIKE AN HOUR FROM SANTA FE GET YOUR BUTTS OVER HERE!" He hung up the phone.
"Uh Jesse?"
"I heard every word. Let's go."
