Chapter Sixteen
"Don't you dare lie to me!" It was a angry yet familiar voice.
"I'm not lying!" The speech was gravelly. Also anger-ridden.
"I can smell your scent all over that girl! She never used to smell like that! Don't tell me you-"
"Will you keep your voice down? Okay, fine. I... I did. But she's my soulmate! I can't exactly stop it." The familiarity washed over me as the second arguer's western accent shone through his defiance. I stirred and pushed myself up, sitting in my bed.
"This scenario is deja vu-ing the Hell out of my head. Why're you arguing?" It was Maria and Jesse. The two were in defensive stances, Maria's usual suave look replaced by one of disgust and anger. Maria sighed, brutally pushing past Jesse.
"Tania, dog-for-brains over here decided it was a good idea to-" Jesse growled, something a person who didn't know he was a Werewolf would mistake for insane behaviour.
"Maria, let me. Please. I'd rather she hear it from me." Maria scoffed and left the room. Jesse sat down on the bed. He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Darl... Tania. I... Last night." The smooth talker from Santa Fe was gone, replaced by a stuttering, false linguist that was in front of me. "When we finally had... y'know... I imprinted on you." I arched an inquisitive eyebrow. What was that? Jesse sensed my unknowing. "It's basically when... a wolf finds his mate for life." He sighed. I didn't get it. Maybe there was an underlying meaning, but I didn't see why Jesse was so upset.
"Jesse, it's okay. What's so bad about imprinting?" Jesse gazed down. He was ashamed. It was like a dark cloud came over him.
"I...." His voice was barely audible. "I own you." That made me a bit jumpy. Own me? How? Like a slave? "I... I didn't want to. I'm sorry..." He sniffled.
"Jesse. What do you mean by 'own'?" He held my hand, looking up at me. His eyes were blinking back tears. I had only seen Jesse emotional once before and that was when I was put in harm's' way.
"Even if we decided to split... You're mine. No one can have your heart like I do." So if I ever wanted a life without Jesse, he's still my soulmate. "And if it even happens, if you get killed..." Jesse's grip on my hand tightened, no longer one of longing but one of protection. "I don't forget. Vengeance becomes my middle name." I put my free hand on his cheek.
"Now this is Twilight speaking, but I thought if a wolf imprints, no one can hurt the receiver." Jesse let out an exasperated chuckle.
"We need to find you some new reading material." He ran his fingers through his hair. "But, Tania.... Darlin' you're taking this awfully well. You don't hate me?" I hugged him tightly.
"Never in a million years." I let go. "Unless you bite me, then you're in the dog house." We both laughed. Jesse let a tear roll down his cheek, my lips kissing it away.
"So, I'm not gonna even say that I hope nothing happens, 'cause the last time I did, we both almost died." I sighed and thought.
"How about we make sure that can't happen? What if I took some combat classes?" Jesse smiled halfly.
"I have never heard of a Vampire drop kicking anyone. Is that a new fad these days?" I shrugged.
"Maybe, but I should learn something so we don't have another Simon incident." I stood up and stretched a little.
"Don't even remind me. Tell ya what. I'll see if there's a karate place around here. We'll go check it out." I snickered and facepalmed.
"Get with the times, Oldie. They're not called 'Karate Places'. But hey, maybe the name'll stick." Jesse growled and tackled me onto the bed. He let out a chuckle.
"Ya really do like mocking me, huh." He kissed my lips, bringing his head down to my neck, across the bite marks Simon had so graciously given me.
"More than anything." Jesse helped me off the bed, and we went on our way around town.
