How do I Explain This

I stared at my completed homework, pencil still on the paper. Chelsea peeked expectantly over the top of her novel.

"Alright! Fine."

I dropped the pencil on the table.

"On Monday me and El were investigating the portal Hawkins Lab ok? And we found some... new monsters. They were controlled by a different mind, and they trapped us here."

Chelsea raised an eyebrow. "That doesn't explain the monster."

I nearly stuttered. "We just met him here. Apparently he was trying to escape the hive mind- the Mind Flayer- and he just kind of joined our gang."

"You mean the entity we summoned with the Ouija board?" She then added, "And why would this dude just randomly help you? He nearly killed Will last year, and he succeeded with Barb; no one ever told me I could talk."

"The thing is, the first time El killed him, she exorcised him, so he's no longer possessed," I replied. God, if you can hear me, get this person off my back before she finds out something she doesn't want to.

Chelsea narrowed her piercing blue eyes. "Rule number one of the AV club: friends don't lie." She then turned to Eleven, who was practicing some sort of satanic sign language. "El, how long have you guys known this obscene-ass demon?"

El looked up, uncertain as she knew well the deal she had to not blab to anyone. "A while."

"Like for how long?"

"Days."

Chelsea scoffed. "Well that was helpful."

"Why do you care so much, anyways?" I snapped. " I told you what happened, and that should be enough."

"Well, it's not, because ever since last week, you've started acting weird. You're acting antisocial,  rarely talk, go home early on weekends, jump nearly out of your skin at my jump scares- Y/N, you never do that, and I'm wonder if he or Eleven, or both of them have something to do with that."

"I'm not sure myself what was up with me at the time, really. I might have been lacking sleep," I lied.

Chelsea's icy blue eyes seemed to pierce through me. "Maybe... or maybe you just have a history with one of these guys that you haven't shared."

I could tell that both Eleven and the demogorgon were trying really hard not to become involved with the interrogation.

"Are you going to fess up and say you found out that El's your long lost sister? That her friend there is your boyfriend?"

"No," I said, just a little too loudly, and not quite calmly. Of course Chelsea picked up the details right away.

"So he is your boyfriend. I thought the first rule was friends don't lie."

"You know why I lied," I replied. "You would think-"

"No, I don't think about that. It's cool with me. What's not cool is lying to your friends. I can't trust you if you don't trust me."

She did have a point, but it's kind of a big undertaking to explain to your friend a relationship with someone who terrorized her home and boyfriend just a few months ago.

I tried to find something to say in defense, agreement, or distract the conversation, but Chelsea just leaned back with her book again.

"Like I said, it's cool, but don't lie."
