They were like wolves with demogorgon heads. Following them out was the odd smoke stuff that El was just barely holding off. She didn't have any affect on the dog-monsters. In my desperation, I broke out the bear spray and doused them with a cloud of it. The dogs yelped in protest as it stung their skin, and then began hacking like crazy. As the cloud spread, we got a dose of it too, and I coughed loudly as it irritated my throat. El wheezed and leaned against the demogorgon as though she couldn't breathe anymore, but still having his bitchy sense of humor, he shoved her away. The dog-monsters were completely disoriented and in pain, milling around and bumping into each other. Finally the Mind Flayer in them took control and growling, they flocked away from the site of the bear spray. They tried to make another attack, but were thrown through the air against the portal by El. Her nose dripped blood, and she was breathing hard as the attempt at closing the portal had already drained her. The demodogs seemed to sense this and went for another attack, this time unrestrained. The leaders came face to foot with the demogorgon, who booted one away like a soccer ball and grabbed the other two as they leaped at him, knocking their heads together. I unleashed another cloud of bear spray. While they were still confused and in pain, we fled back out the way we came, me supporting El as she struggled along.

I could hear the demodogs barge into the stairwell as we raced up the stairs. I wasn't thinking, and neither was anyone else. When we reached the last level, I blasted through the door and held it for the rest of the squad and them slammed it after them. We were on the roof. Instinctively, we ran for anything that looked like a hideout which happened to be the huge, inclined solar panels. Not long after, the door blew open and millions of claws clicked on the cement like the feet off medieval soldiers. Even El was scared. To minimize the  space we took up, she scooted closer us and was nearly touching the demogorgon(what was her thing with leaning on him ?). But he nudged her away.

"Piss off," he whispered, and El gave him a death glare.

His rebuke hadn't been anything over a whisper, but the closest demodog looked up and barked something in gibberish to the others. They began making their way towards our hiding place. My heart pounding, I pulled a spared battery out of my backpack and threw it as far away as I could. It banged against a ventilation shaft and left my ears ringing. The entire pack of demodogs ran over to investigate. Taking the opportunity, I darted out of the hideout and to the entrance to the stairs, followed by El and the demogorgon. We didn't hesitate to run down the stairs. The demodogs weren't far behind, and I had a hand on the bear spray. There was a flash of bluish gray as the demogorgon passed me and jumped over the side of the staircase. I sucked in a sharp breath, thinking he would surely land at the bottom and break something, but he caught himself a few levels down and pulled himself onto the flight.

"Come down here!" He called to us. El lifted us both into the air and we shot down to the level.

"Where can we actually escape these guys?" I hissed, as the cries of frustration from the Mind Flayer's army got closer.

"We have to go somewhere that he won't expect us to be. Somewhere that would catch him off guard."

"And where would that be?" I asked.

"To the Upside Down," the demogorgon replied, jumping down the stairwell again, me and El following. Back to the basement again.

The demodogs had lost us, and the guard at the portal was lying on the ground, dead. His nose and mouth spilled blood and he lay broken on the ground as though he had tried to jump down the stairs too and failed. We moved around his body. Just to be safe, I mugged him of his tool belt. I just stuffed the entire thing in my backpack. The demogorgon took a swan dive into the portal and disappeared into the mass of membranes. El just ripped a giant hole in it and walked through, holding it for me before carefully setting it down. She was spent, and I had to almost carry her as we ascended to the second flight and went into the parking lot. Off to one side, the sky looked stormy and static, and I could see glimpses of the Mind Flayer in the distance. We avoided him and went off down the road towards our neighborhood. We needed a place to stay for the night, so I lead the trio to my house. Once inside, I had a surprising sense of comfort and familiarity, seeing how this was the Upside Down. Nevertheless, I was dead on my feet and not thinking straight.

"You can have my brother's room," I mumbled to Eleven. "It has a TV and a gaming console. There might be some eggos in the fridge."

That turned the telekinetic on, and she scampered off to the kitchen. I walked up the stairs, followed by the demogorgon.

"Jesus I'm tired," I declared, tumbling onto the bed and taking my shoes off. The demogorgon joined me, and I was asleep by the time he put his arm around my waist.
