Jamie was cooking something that smelled.. amazing. I think it was Fettuccine Alfredo, with garden salad as a side. And smelling it made me want to eat all of it. Literally.
I sat on the island and watched him in fascination, and as I realized that it was five minutes away from being 6 o'clock, I became more anxious. They'll love him. I kept repeating the thought in my head, almost as if it was a prayer; something I lived by everyday. I decided to make some sort of small-talk before they got here. "Jamie?"
"Babe," He replied. "Hang on a second, try this sauce I'm using." He held the wooden spoon out, and I lightly tasted it, falling in love as soon as my taste buds reacted. "Mmh.."
"That good, huh?"
"That's amazing. They'll love it. Dad loves that kind of stuff." I replied, praying that the taste didn't leave my mouth. "But, are you nervous?"
"Yeah.. aren't you?" He asked, tossing the spoon in the sink. I nodded, looking down at the floor below me. "Hey," He suddenly tilted my chin up and gazed into my eyes. "Don't be... baby, we're in this together. No matter what happens. Okay?"
I smiled at him. "Okay. Now, go get dressed; I saw your clothes on your bed." He smiled at me, and leaned in to kiss my nose. I scrunched my face up, and he laughed. "I'll be back." He left the kitchen, and I texted Allie real quick.
Me: I'm nervous, Al. Really damn nervous..
She texted me back instantly.
Al: Don't be, Beth. I can guarantee that they'll love him. I seriously bet. And, even if they decide that, for some unknown reason, they don't like him, then forget them. I mean, you're an adult. You're able to make your own choices. This is about you and Jamie, and ONLY you and Jamie. It doesn't involve your family, it doesn't even involve me. I promise, once they get to know him, and once they see how happy you are with him, theyll learn to like him, just because of that reason. I mean, Nick and Adam already like him, so you have my support, as well as their's. You'll be fine, doll. Okay? I love you, and I'm here for you. Call me later tonight.
I have the greatest best friend, on the whole planet, I thought.
Me: I seriously needed to hear that. Thanks, Al. I love you, too. & I will.
After I read that text for the fourth time, I heard Jamie waltzing back across the polished floor. He was dressed in dark brown slacks, a white button-up shirt with a brown tie, and a pair of brown Dockers. I couldn't help but stare. He looked amazing, and it made my heart swell to know that he wanted to make a good impression.
"You look hot." I bluntly said. He walked over to me, and helped me off the island. He eyed me up and down, and smiled boyishly.
"Not so bad yourself, Collins." He replied. I was dressed in a beige sweater dress with dark brown leggings, and dark brown flats. My hair was also curled. We tried to match the best we could. He smiled, pulling me into an embrace. His ear was nuzzled into my temple, and I never realized how close we were in height, until he did that. We slowly moved back in forth in a sway-like motion, and the doorbell rang. We stopped, pulled away, and looked each other in the eyes.
"Ready?" He asked. I nodded. "Ready." And, oddly enough, we high-fived. Like, we were about to committ a crime; like we were about to play football or something. He decided to stand further back while I opened the door. Dad, mom, and Nick came in together, and I hugged them all. I saw a figure emerge from behind Nick in the shadows, and once I saw who it was, I started crying.
It was Adam.
He was home.
"Adam!" I screamed.
