Smother

You run through my veins like fire,
consuming every space beneath the surface and smothering everything you touch.
Smoke wells in my lungs, searching for the lover that created such welcome destruction and left as if she'd done nothing at all.

You swim in my thoughts, a blue haze surrounded by embers and drenched in winter rain.
Water climbs my throat, desperate to spew forth and find another lover:
A lover who carries every season and smothers the sun.
A lover unburdened by pain.
