Selya Williams combed her fingers through her wavy shoulder length hair to tame askew strands then ran her hands down her side to smooth her gait.
Tonight was a special night and she had gone the extra mile to dress to the nines. She had on a black spaghetti- strap fuzzy dress instead of her usual business attire. She just couldn't keep her hands to herself as they would inadvertently go to rearrange her hair or her dress, she was especially feeling all giddy as she thought of the romantic candle-lit dinner she had set up just for Gale and her and she couldn't wait for him to walk through that door and sweep her off her feet and give her a kiss and then what happens next she didn't need to say.
Selya felt suddenly hot at that and giggled nervously. She wasn't a high school girl with a crush but a mature woman of twenty-five but she couldn't help feeling like she was seventeen again.
"Do I even need to ask what's had you giggling like a six year old who's just seen his favourite candy?" Selya's eyes met Lizzy's in the mirror. She had been so engrossed in her own little fantasy that she had failed to hear her friend come into the room.
"You can't blame me, I'm just so excited right now."
"Oh I can see that. At this rate even the moon won't be able to see your shadow." Lizzy teased.
"Oh stop it." Selya subtly nudged her friend's shoulder. "Do I look okay? Is my make up too slutty? What about my dress?" Selya left the mirror and perched on the edge of the bed.
"Pipe down will you, you're just perfect. After all you had the best stylist in the whole of Manhattan." Selya had to agree on that, she had been blown off her feet when she got a look of herself in the mirror after hours of careful pruning and primping she was unable to recognise the gorgeous woman before her whose honey toned skin glowed with what could only be from excitement and Lizzy's incredible magical fingers. The transformation had been divine and all she saw was a swan in place of a duck.
''Alright, I should scram before he gets here. My work is done.'' Lizzy reached for her purse on the dressing table, whipping her blonde hair in the process. ''I can't wait to hear every juicy detail when I return.'' She winked at her friend smiling meaningfully and Selya all but rolled her eyes.
''I won't promise anything but I'll try.''
After she heard the soft click of the door, an indication that Lizzy was gone Selya sprang to the mirror again to give herself a final once over before deciding she was set.
Staring at the sparkly gem on her finger, Selya's smile blossomed into a full blown grin. Gale was coming back tonight. She had missed him profusely.
A quick glance at the clock told her there was only fifteen more minutes to go. Selya couldn't tell why though but she was a bundle of nerves, it wasn't like this was the first time they were having dinner at her place, but those times had been the occasional pizza or Chinese take-out this one was candle-lit topped with flowers and wine with food she had prepared herself just for him. He had only been gone for two weeks but it felt like a year.
Selya went over everything, making sure nothing was left out before she allowed herself to take a sit at the table and sigh.
Nothing can go wong was what she thought but five hours and three glasses of wine later she was hit with the harsh reality that he wasn't coming. Selya was filled with disappointment but crippled with worry wondering if something bad had happened to him. Why wouldn't he call her though? She wondered, he hadn't even sent her any text messages.
She tried calling a number of times but she keeps getting his voicemail.
It was the same the next day and the day after and then she decided to confront him head on. If he was having second thoughts the least he could do is man up and tell her to her face instead of this—this cheap theatrics he's resulting to.
It seemed as if she got what she didn't bargain for when she decided to go to his office.
He had a wife—a bombshell beauty she might add—and a son who looked to be at least seven with another on the way.
Gale had called her a stalker.
She had been too shocked and disgusted to even offer her side of the story. What would she have said? Nobody would believe that she had no prior knowledge of his status in which case she was the slut, the homewrecker, nobody would take the word of a gossip magazine writer to that of a top notch lawyer so Selya gathered whatever self respect she had left and scrambled out of the building.
