CHAPTER FOUR
Selya broke down, her resolve shattered suddenly and it was then that the dam burst open. Her shoulders shook violently as she was overwhelmed by heart wrenching sobs. She had too many emotions bottled in and her heart just couldn't handle it anymore and for the first time since Gale left her Selya cried.
There was anger, resentment and hatred toward herself because she had been fooled over and over again by Gale and all the others, they kept taking and taking until there's nothing left of her but an empty shattered heart and a miserable, hollow soul.
It felt so good to be able to let it all out.
When her sobs finally turned into soft hollow whimpers she felt a presence and the unforgiving pelts from the rain ceased. Selya looked up to discover an umbrella over her before her eyes met the caring hazel eyes of its bearer which held no pity but concern as he stared down at her. Feeling a bit more of herself Selya saw the man clearly and her eyes rounded in recognition and she realised for the first time that she had let none other than Wade Ashburn one of the city's most eligible bachelors drive her around and she had been making a fool of herself all night. Could this night get any worse? She thought miserably.
''Feel okay now?''
She heard him say over the rain. Selya's throat closed up in embarrassment she didn't trust herself to not make anymore blunders so she nodded her response.
Wade didn't know what to say to someone who's so obviously distraught but he hoped he was sensible enough. He watched her pick herself from the ground staggering as she did he reached for her but she shrugged off his help. ''It's getting late and the rain isn't stopping anytime soon. You might get sick.'' She eyed him in distrust.
''What do you care? I actually think you're just like the rest of them, you play with people's emotions and then you leave like nothing happened.'' She accused.
''I beg your pardon miss but you don't know anything about me to make such an accusation.'' His tone was hard and unforgiving.
''He said he loved me, he gave me a ring but he already has a wife and kid can you imagine?'' She let out a dry laugh. ''And look—'' she raised her fingers to his view, ''I'm still wearing his ring how pathetic.'' She sniffed. ''I must be the biggest fool on the planet.''
Wade felt the familiar stab In his heart. Here was someone who was betrayed by a loved one like he was, someone who was feeling the same pain as he was.
''You are not pathetic.'' He watched her eyes go wide like she wasn't expecting him to say anything at all much less those four words. Her legs gave out suddenly and in a flash he caught her, scooping her up, his umbrella discarded. ''I got you.'' He whispered, oblivious to the rain that was now soaking his well styled hair and custom made shoes as he made for his car with her still in his arms.
Selya should've protested that he put her down, that he had no right to touch her much less carry her but the gentleness and protection of his arms were too good to pass off.
His breath caressed the skin around her ear causing her to shiver in reaction.
Selya held on to him like her life depended on it. Here in his arms she felt...safe.
